The private onsen was the best part of the trip. It is on the deck and you can literally spend hours soaking in the nature. In addition, the staff was beyond lovely and were extremely helpful. They even offered to draw me a map of the different walking routes. The food was also amazing at the restaurant. The chicken and pork were good as well as the hida beef. Room is very spacious. It is traditional Japanese so there is no standup shower but does how the stuff for a good onsen soak.

Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed.
There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.
Oyado Koto No Yume in Takayama is a charming and beautiful ryokan. The service was exceptional, with the staff warmly welcoming us and providing snacks, yukata, and a tour of the facilities. The traditional experience of sleeping on a futon over tatami mats was delightful. Our stay was peaceful and rejuvenating, especially enjoying the serene public onsen in the early morning. One of the highlights was the delicious traditional Japanese breakfast. Highly recommended for a memorable stay in Takayama.
The only good sized room that we booked in Japan. I searched for hotel rooms for two adults and two kids and none of the hotels had space for the 4th person except for this one thats why I really appreciated four beds. kitchenette had everything essential that we needed. bathroom had laundry which was great help specially when you are with toddlers. shower was amazing. there is a 7/11 across the street and Takayama station and bus stop are about a 6 min walk. loved everything about this hotel.
This hotel is right behind the Takayama JR station, super close! Breakfast and dinner was provided as well which was super delicious. But do go early for the meals as they run out towards the end, especially the Hida beef during breakfast. At the reception, they provide skincare products, bath bomb, additional toiletries and even shoe drier which was a life saver as our shoes were drenched from walking in the rain the whole day. Will definitely come back to this hotel in the future!
This hotel has a very convenient location - it is just across the street from the main train station and they offer free luggage storage both before check-in and after check-out. Staff can speak English well. The room was comfortable, clean, quiet, with a mini fridge and a kettle. The price was very affordable and it even included free buffet breakfast. I would not think twice where to stay if I am ever back in Takayama. Thank you for a great experience.
Located in close proximity to Takayama's most interesting streets and sights, the hotel's inviting reception area offered ample seating options, while the free sake and beer in the evening added to the pleasant experience. The nice public onsen provided a relaxing escape, and the staff's attentiveness made the stay even more enjoyable. However, the breakfast consisted only of a standard Japanese set served per person, which was delicious.
The ultimate choice for an authentic Japanese Ryokan experience!
We had a room with Tatami mats and futon beds, a private bathroom and we got to wear Yukatas in and out of the hotel.
The staff was super friendly and helped us with whatever we needed and breakfast was also great (Both the Japanese and European one). The Train and Bus stations were just 2 minutes walking distance. Thanks for everything!
Very nice and traditional Ryokan near the main attraction of Takayama. The staff was always attentive and welcoming with us. The traditional Japan dinner and breakfast are served in your room at specific times and with a fix menù so l suggest this experience only to who is open to try new and very different tastes compared to our usual continental dinners.Overall an excellent stay!
Traditional ryokan with great attention. The staff was extremely friendly and provided an excellent service. The breakfast and specially the dinner was fantastic, the best meal by far we had in Japan.
The onsen of the hotel is small but very nice. Access to the onsen of the Alpina hotel is provided as well, which is bigger and having nice views of the city.
We loved Wanosato. It is well worth planning your trip to stay at this cozy traditional ryokan with onsen outside of Takayama. The food was delicious. The spa was exceptional. We stayed in a villa that had huge windows looking onto the river. Extremely romantic! My favorite part of our trip to Japan.
Absolutely amazing! Our best experience in Japan! The ryokan is so well let and well decorated, and everyone was very accommodating and kind. The onsen was also great and breakfast was delicious. I would come to Takayama again just for the chance to stay here again.
Wow! What an amazing experience. The staff of Oyado Yamakyu were so hospitable and accommodating and really made the ryokan experience unforgettable. The meals were beautifully presented and so unique! Wish we had spent a few more days at Oyado Yamakyu in Takayama.
Comfortable ryokan experience with very kind staff. The private onsen is a luxury which we used every day. When we arrived the staff from the hotel came to the train station to pick us up. The ryokan also offers free scheduled shuttle service to the station. .
Our most authentic stay in Japan! We loved the host couple and all the people that helped make Sumiyoshi Ryokan special. We felt like honored guests in this home. The food was amazing! Takayama is a walkable town and we had no need for any transport.
Beautiful clean and modern hotel with onsen. Onsen was quite busy at 9pm, but after 10pm you could get a private one without problem. The breakfast was great in a form of buffet, western and japanese style. The employees spoke very English very well.
It is what to be expected from ryokan style hotel. Various types of onsen for both indoor and outdoor. The location is not far from akandana parking lot but can be considered a little far if not driving. But we are driving so everything is good.
Great ryokan with very friendly staff. Our room had a splendid view of the Takayama and the mountains. The onsen and the food were great. The ryokan is located in a quiet part of the town with a lot of traditional houses.
Location - a minute walk from Takayama Nohi Bus station and a few minutes from old town. Free coffee. Comfortable bed. Spacious room and bathroom. Helpful hotel staff. Very comfortable one piece pajama/spa dress.
It is a very nice Ryokan just in the hearth of Takayama. Super specious for the Japanese standards.
The host was very friendly and helpful.
There is a shared kitchen and a small, but very beautiful garden.
