Nice little city to explore for a few days at the end of a two week trip to Puerto Rico. I always explore the capital last when visiting a country, gives me a chance to explore the culture before diving into the big smoke.
Old San Juan is a charming architectural town, but is invaded by cruise ships daily. By the evening the ships clear off and the streets are quieter.
A lot of restaurants close reasonably early which is something that takes some getting used to. So if you want the widest choice, be seated around 8pm.
If you're looking for a good beer and empanada, visit Deshistoria: Birra & Empanadas. If you're looking for an excellent dive bar visit El Batey Bar.
Don't be afraid to visit the old barrio of La Perla, on the northern old town waterfront. Some lively little bars on the seafront where music, dancing and ice cold beers flow.
For a real flavour of local life in the capital you really need to explore around the Santurce area. Loads of local eateries and a vibrant nightlife scene.
Santurce is also a great area to check out some of PR's best street art.
San Juan isn't cheap, so don't expect a bargain stay. Old San Juan being the most expensive of the neighborhoods. Tipping 15% is also the norm at most establishments.
If you're visiting PR, I highly recommend hiring a car and getting out of the city. Driving is safe and simple with 24/7 hire companies at the airport. Fuel is priced per litre and isn't that expensive given the small size of the island and decent road conditions.
The best food can be found in many out of the way places along the road, not necessarily in town, so if it's busy when you pass by, stop, get yourself a table and tuck in to whatever everyone else is eating. You won't be disappointed.

Meals were fantastic at The Royal Sonesta Resort, but very large portions and pricey. Ruth Kris on site was a wonderful option to celebrate and we were able to make reservations with ease using opentable app. Loved the room, but the view of the ugly roof top could be improved with a little artistic imagination. Maybe paint the roof below those balcony ocean view rooms with a large wave mural camouflage replicating the blue turquoise ocean waves and white sands. Was distracting from the beautiful resort and ocean views. Old San Juan tour was beautiful and wonderful History. Manatee and Turtle excursion was cancelled with the bipolar weather of April - rain and too windy 'unusual according to the locals'. There were lots of beautiful adventures to explore but we didn't have enough time to see a lot of the fun stuff. Bioluminescent tour, rainforest, mountains, and hikes to the water falls, snorkeling with turtles, Bicardi Rum Factory. I didn't get to experience, but will definitely return to do so another time. Locals say to be leary of certain areas at night.
We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel for $20 plus tip,and returned hotel to AP with an Uber XL for $16 plus tip. We disembarked from our cruise and took the old and new San Juan Excursion with the cruiseline, so all our luggage was transferred including the carryons and we didn't have to lug it around while waiting before Hotel check in time at 4pm. We arrived early at the hotel and enjoyed lunch then the pool and waited for a text to inform us later that day when the room was ready. We had just room service that first night, second night was at Ruth Kris.

I was in the Santurce arts district at a cheaper hotel, and I'm glad I did that. The beach scene is kind of trashy, but might be fine for some folks. The Old San Juan area is a tourist place, though some good restaurants. Definitely see the Colon and el Morro forts.
If I were to do it again, I'd rent a car and get out of San Juan to have multiple days for el Yunque and other natural areas, and to just drive around the rest of the island.
You can uber around, or rent scooters, and the busses go to the main places you'd want to visit.

North, south and east water fronts are walking distance.
North, south and east water fronts are walking distance. Walk the del Morro shore trail for beautiful views, iguanas and many outdoor cats. Shopping, restaurants and bars galore. We loved Kaffe Haus for breakfast, and La Taberna Lupulo has many craft beers and fabulous fish tacos. Warning: it is hot and very humid. Rains a lot!

Puerto Rico is an island, but we are conservative in our way of dressing, and walk with in our bathing suits only in the beach.
Please be aware that not all the beaches are safe for swimming. San Juan faces the North Atlantic, with its strong currents.
Please do not walk the streets with expensive jewelry.
Park in paid parking, if possible.
Loved this property! It was just as the photos looked, it was like an apartment-style hotel. With the shared pool, and common space. Make sure you check on the beach 5 minutes away! It's gorgeous :) The room amenities had everything you needed great shampoo, soap etc., and lots of towels! The staff was very friendly and helpful with whatever I needed :) While, the pool is small, its very helpful if you are trying to catch some rays since it is hot! Very -boho cute, and there is a Starbucks + grocery store right across the street.
The location was perfect, Condado area is very nice with a lot of options for dining and partying. The hotel has free sunbeds and umbrellas for its guests on the beach which is great, and you also get a towel from the hotel. Beach is within walking distance from the hotel and it`s really nice, though a bit windy and with waves. Rooms are nice and clean, spacious with a lot of amenities included. The room had a partial ocean view which was nice.
Wonderful boutique hotel right in the middle of old San Juan - walking distance to everywhere we wanted to be. We were in the 2 bedroom suite with full kitchen, high ceilings, 2 bathrooms - felt like we were staying in an old Spanish hacienda. Staff very friendly. Excellent cafe con leche available (for purchase) in the monrings. Breakfast also - we are not big breakfast eaters but it looked good. We felt very lucky to have found this gem.
The hotel was nice. Very colorful, the decor was modern. The location was great. You really are at the central location of a lot.A bonus was that the store was right on the corner. The pool area was a great place to relax. The breakfast was not the best, but it was accommodating. A little tip call the Carabali Rainforest Adventure Park directly it's definitely cheaper that way, and they have more when you are there .
The room was clean. The hotel is "bare bones" but the price was right for the location and good for a 1-2 night stay. We were in San Juan to go on a cruise. The room was a good size and the bed was comfortable. Within walking distance of a grocery store and several restaurants. The AC worked well. Hotel offered complimentary shuttle service to the cruise port. We would stay again if in San Juan for a cruise.
This is a very basic hotel. There are a few amenities like a small kitchen area (in the hotel, not the room) but don't expect anything fancy. That said, the staff were very pleasant and helpful, the rooms were clean and it felt secure. The location is excellent for both access to the beach (good surfing one beach over) and the airport. Old Town is a short cab or Uber away.
This hotel was perfect for our trip to San Juan. So close to the beach and we were surprised when we found out the hotel provides chairs, towels, and umbrellas free of charge on the beach. Great restaurants nearby! Super clean and wonderful staff. We will definitely stay here again if we return to San Juan.
I love this hotel. The location is perfect and the accommodations are exceptional. The staff are all super accommodating and the rooms are extremely comfortable. Its an old building so the outside noise can be hard in the room, but that happens everywhere in old san juan. I will definitely be coming back!
I loved everything about Embassy suites in San Juan. It is my preferred hotel when staying in SJ.Only thing missing are balconies. But it’s convenient and accessible to all food, casino’s and walking distance to beach! Another awesome thing is the pool stay open til 11pm and that’s a plus!!!!
All the staff were very friendly and attentive to all of my needs. The room and all over the hotel was spotless very clean. Had restaurants and bars at site with great food and drinks will definitely be returning next time I’m in Puerto Rico!
The hotel is modern and sleek, in close proximity to Ols San Juan and all the historic sites. Ubers on the island are extremely cheap, so to get from the airport was $10, and to the very furtherest point in Old San Juan was only $5.
Hotel was very nice. Rooms were very clean and the spa pool is beautiful! It was walking distance from several very nice restaurants and shopping. It could not have been closer to the beach without being on the beach!
We stayed here as we had a flight that landed at midnight, and we just wanted to go to bed before checking in to our next hotel in San Juan. We checked in right away, it was easy and perfect for a one night layover.
I really enjoyed this hotel a lot! It is located in the middle of Old San Juan so you can walk pretty much anywhere nearby. There is also a 24/7 open bar service for guests. Hotel staff are incredibly friendly.
The hotel's location is great, right next to the beach and local spots. The ride from airport was quick and fairly priced. Uber to Old San Juan was cheap and quick. The room was big enough for 2 people.
The hotel is very nice. Atmosphere, decoration, rooms, beds, breakfast. Next to the beach, 10 min Uber to Viejo San Juan and few minutes from La Placita. Highly recommended
