Just to get it out of the way, the rooms are tiny. One of the smaller hotels I have ever stayed in. But I didn't go to Santa Cruz for the hotel. I went for the beach/boardwalk. The room had enough room to sleep in, was clean, and was close to the beach. Just don't expect a 500 sq foot room and you'll be happy.

Location was great. The facilities were clean and the beds were comfortable. They accommodated us with more blankets when needed. Loved that they cleaned the rooms daily. Also the fire pit with s’mores was a great option.

FAQs about hotels in Santa Cruz

Surfin’ USA in Bohemian CA

Santa Cruz was surf central California long before the Beach Boys sang about it. The Surfing Museum in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse tells stories of those who have braved some of the world’s best waves.

Overlooking the ocean rollers are the Coconut Grove Ballroom and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk - the oldest amusement park in the state of CA, and the last original one on the West Coast. Its historic carousel, rollercoasters and rides are a colourful backdrop to Cowell’s Beach, best viewed from the Sky Glider cable cars.

Jutting into Monterey Bay is the wharf where sea lions bask and pelicans decide on their next meal. Seafood restaurants are abundant here and the bars provide lively nightlife. Pacific Avenue is the main shopping area and one street away is the Museum of Art & History.

Unsurprisingly for a surfer hotspot, the city has a liberal outlook and is known for political activism - a far cry from the era when the Santa Cruz Mission was established. The mission is now a state park alongside Natural Bridges Beach and the Big Basin Redwoods in forested hills behind the city, home to the gravity-defying Mystery Spot.

Booking.com’s Santa Cruz accommodation includes pet-friendly motels, hotels with hot tubs and cheap inns near UCSC.

When I was young I lived in San Jose and our mom would bring us to Santa Cruz all summer long. Coming again as an adult brought back so many fond memories. The boardwalk was so different then then. Santa Cruz is such a fun place and so many rides and shops. Every child needs to experience it at least once in their lifetime.

We, unfortunately, chose to visit during the busiest part of the season, but aside from traffic and the Murray Bridge being out, we didn't feel inconvenienced by the larger crowds. The beaches were clean, the warf was a blast, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center was amazing, food was great and the locals were kind!

The Santa Cruz vibe is real: diverse (happy) people, terrific beaches, lots of eateries, beach boardwalk and arcade fun. Walking around the boardwalk area feels safe, if crowded, on weekends. There is definitely a broad range of fun activities for families.

We enjoy going to the beaches, the Boardwalk and the local restaurants. We found that breakfast at Zachary's was excellent. Their potatoes are really tasty and the have homemade bread. We had dinner at Bedda Mia. Their Spaghetti alle vongole and Carbonara is good. We would go back to both of those places.

But I most like the beaches I would like to just sit out there for half a day towards the evening a watch the sunset. It’s just beautiful and everything else is fine. I like the food places. I recommend them to check out some of the food places just wanted a little more time at this wonderful little place to stay or live.

Santa Cruz is a big part of my family's history.

Santa Cruz is a big part of my family's history. It's my happy place and is now my kids', too. We love the ocean & beaches anywhere, but it's special here. We love the town, it's age, architecture and setting. Weather is unbeatable. The Boardwalk is famous for a reason. It's big, but not too big. Rides are a perfect balance of terrifying to just fun so there's something for everyone. Some of us don't do rides at all and are perfectly happy with the beach, arcades, games and shops instead. I do have to warn that prices have gone up noticeably this year and they weren't bargains to begin with. All day parking across from the Boardwalk is now $35, large corn dogs are almost $10. There aren't as many beach showers available anymore and the whole Boardwalk has gone cashless, card only. You can buy one from a vending machine or kiosk good anywhere on the Walk if you don't have a credit card. They removed most of the classic arcade games from the main arcade, which is a loss to my husband, my sister and me. Ticket values from games in the redemption center have gone way down, too, in this new economy. But the mini golf is still there and fun as always 😉 Prices are up all over town, not just the Boardwalk. Our family's must-visit is Santa Cruz Diner & almost every breakfast item now starts at $19+. You can keep costs down a bit by going on off peak days or even season & using the fridge in ur room for meals and snacks. Enjoy it all, but be prepared to pay!
