Ninh binh as a city is nothing much.
Ninh binh as a city is nothing much. About 6-8km to the west are beautiful limestone karsts covered with vegetation with rivers running around and through them. Boat trips can be taken from tam coc or trang an. Trang an is prettier and less busy. The trips at both places take you to temples and pagodas, through caves. Trips last about 2-3hours. There are many others things to do such as trek in national parks, bird sanctuary, visit the largest temple Bai Dinh (go at 3, quieter and cooler and watch sunset from pagoda then walk down the hill with everything lit up). The most enjoyable thing to do is just be in amongst the karsts. Ride bikes or walk. It is hot and humid. More so than Halong bay. Avoid the heat of the day so take a long lunch break. I still personally prefer ninh binh limestone karst area. You have more control and variety of what you do. As my husband pointed out when we arrived at Halong bay it’s very similar. The best place of our trip in Vietnam. The place has a very different vibe than the other cities. The main area of stay is Tam Coc which has a plenty of options of food, boat rides etc. It's a perfect place for bicycle riding, rental bikes etc.

Tam Coc is more touristy than Trang An.
Tam Coc is more touristy than Trang An. I would suggest skipping the boat tour at Tam Coc and just go for the Mua Cave tour. For Trang An, opt for their boat tour. The views are nicer. Bai Dinh Pagoda is also worth a visit.GwenSingapore

Trang An is a quiet part of the area so if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Ninh Binh / Tam Coc - Trang An is perfect and this is also an oasis within Trang An - set away from the main road. The family running the homestay are lovely and very friendly. We rented a scooter from them (the best scooter I´ve rented in Vietnam) and they also helped organize transport out to Hanoi. We liked the homestay so much we extended our stay there!
