Obviously the ruins (Scavi) are the main draw, but the town is very pretty. The Catholic Basilica does not have the size of the major basilicas in Rome, but it is just as beautiful. You do not have to stay here in order to see the ruins, but it does make it a less hectic experience. The ruins are free on the first Sunday of every month and on certain holidays. We went for free on Liberation Day (25 Apr).

Definitely a great place to stay to see the nearby...
Definitely a great place to stay to see the nearby attractions but, despite having three train stations, the transport links are not great. We were based here for a week and found the public transport frustrating. Last minute platform changes for trains only announced in Italian and giving insufficient time to change to the right platform. Buses leaving up to ten minutes early or not stopping. There is a Flixbus to Sorrento but it only gives three and a bit hours on a day trip from Pompei. To visit Capri we had to have a night in Sorrento which was an unexpected extra expense. On a final note if you eat gluten free the choice is fantastic. It is understood and catered for!

Pompeii is a lovely and cozy and absolutely beautiful town!
Pompeii is a lovely and cozy and absolutely beautiful town!
As a solo female traveler I always felt very safe, and I was able to fully enjoy and explore both the city, and the sights like the ruins and mount vesuvius.
Note that there aren’t any Ubers or any easy way to get a taxi if you’re staying a little outside the main city core (I stayed at a 30 minute walk away from the Main Street), but it’s very walkable and there’s pavement all around, and some busses if you can figure them out but I generally just walked everywhere :)
There’s also areas for parking if you’re bringing/renting a car or even for campers and RV’s right next to the city centre (abt 3-5min walk from the Main Street).
The Pompeii ruins are a must visit and I recommend going with a guide that’s also an archeologist, I found several tours including the one I took that also went to Herculaneum via GetYourGuide. There I also found the “tour” (just a shuttle bus really) that went to the highest entrance of Mount Vesuvius (leaving a 20min/1km hike to the top of the crater) which was also very cool and I definitely recommend going there too while you’re in Pompeii!

The ruins of Pompei is an amazing place to visit.
The ruins of Pompei is an amazing place to visit. We booked a personal guide with Askos tours. A fella by the name of Alfredo. He was an archaeologist and had worked on the excavation of Pompei so he was full of amazing facts. You can walk around on your own but without the right guide it would be a waste. So many amall details that you would miss on your own. Its a long day walking but worth every step. I would highly recommend seeing it.

We took a tour with archaeologist which was interesting.
We took a tour with archaeologist which was interesting. sadly it was afternoon so did not have long to look around and places closed at 4pm. would go in first and look around or spend longer after. January nice and quiet.
This hotel is spotlessly clean. All rooms and public areas such as hallways were cleaned thoroughly daily. The hotel is of it's time yes, a little dated but brilliantly designed and built with very high quality materials. The pool area is fantastic, the design is just amazing, a real piece of quality architecture. Very good value for money and if your reason for being here is for Pompeii it's 5 minutes walk away, it would be ideal for say a two or three night stay if you want to give Pompeii and Herculaneum the attention they deserve.
One of the best experiences. The owners are lovely and helpful. The house is clean, AC works great, the breakfast was top-notch, and the pool was beautiful and refreshing. You cannot beat the location - walking distance from the Pompei ruins, several restaurants, and the train station to get on the train to Sorento, Positano, Rome. We were also allowed to leave our car on the premises after we checked out for the entire day - which saved us a headache and money on parking when we went to tour Pompei and Vesuvius. We loved it!
The location of this hotel cannot be beat - literally next door to one of the entrances to Pompeii. It has the feel of a Victorian era establishment and, best of all, a hotel dog, Nola, who greets visitors and allows them to pet her. Parking was easy once we turned the car keys over to staff who expertly put the car where it needed to go (and got it out for us upon departure). It's easy to walk to nearby restaurants. Getting in and out of the archaeological park of Pompeii couldn't have been easier.
This hotel was great! Rooms were overlooking the archaeological site of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius! We stayed in a superior suite with jacuzzi and the room looked like a Roman temple. The room was huge, decor was awesome! Huge shower, jacuzzi was awesome! Good breakfast complete with another amazing view. 10-15 minute walk away from Pompei train station. 10 minute walk from main entrance of Pompeii ruins. Super nice hotel complete with great robes! The attached restaurant was also very good!
We LOVED our stay here. The best place we stayed in Italy. The manager is super nice and she gave us a step by step instructions about everything. The breakfast was delicious. The room is super clean and cozy. Everyone were very nice to us. The property has a free private parking. The location is great (10 min walk to the Archeological park of Pompei).
The included dinner was SO GOOD - my husband and I agreed it was the best meal we had on our trip to Italy. The pool was a refreshing way to end a long, hot day of touring Pompeii. The hotel is only a short walk to the main entrance of the Pompeii ruins. We were shown wonderful hospitality throughout our stay.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel Santa Caterina in Pompei. Friendly, courteous and helpful staff. The price was very good, and included free parking and free breakfast. The hotel itself is perfectly located, mere steps away from the entrance to the Pompei Ruins. We strongly recommend this property!
The location was great. In walking distance from the train station. The room was quite modern in comparison to other places we stayed at in Italy. Roberto was welcoming. Recommended a restaurant close by which we decided to go for. Unforgettable experience at this roman restaurant.
Beautiful room very comfortable …..great bonus was Netflix in the room . Also very happy as the breakfast voucher could be exchanged for a vegan croissant and soya cappuccino at the cafe near to the property…… very hard to get anything vegan in Italy so definitely a result !
Great property and lovely family hosting it. Absolutely loved the theming of the room and the heating worked great, which has been rare in the south of Italy so far. Also allowed us to leave our bags for free while we visited Herculaneum for the day. Breakfast was great too!
The nicest place we've ever stayed in Italy by a mile. Staff were amazing, the rooms are beautiful with everything you could possibly want, and we can't believe the value for the price ❤️. Perfect location too. Thank you Terra Mia!! We would 10000% stay again.
The owners added special touches that we didn’t find in other B and B’s in Italy. Drinks in the fridge, a small bottle of Prosecco, and more. I felt they were glad we were there. Bathroom was spacious. The location was great for walking to the ruins.
The location and the parking at the rear of the hotel allowed us to rock up and get sorted quickly on our tour of Italy. The bar/restaurant as you enter the hotel is very good, lots of people and good atmosphere.
The best stay on our trip through Italy and a great start before embarking to Amalfi. Lovely host, great location and parking space for free - everything in walking distance
Cannot recommend enough
Beautiful, spotless property a short walk to Pompei ruins. The best part of our stay was our wonderful hostess who provided us with so much, including the best breakfast I’ve ever had at a B and B.
Excellent location: close to Pompei ruins, grocery and restaurants. Excellent host who put on a fantastic breakfast with the best cappuccino and espresso! Communication response was very quick.
The rooms were clean. Simple and tasty breakfast. Parking available on site although the number of available spots seemed quite small. But I think this is the case everywhere in Italy.
Excellent breakfast with savory options, which is uncommon in Italy. Unbeatable location in the triangle of the ruins, the new town and the 3 train stations.
