There is no need to book your tickets on line. I was able to purchase my ticket within two minutes of arriving. There is more than one entrance and tour groups normally make up the bulk of the tickets. Also if you are thinking about going to Vesuvius, use the public bus 3 euros one way that departs from the entrance area of Pompeii. It takes you to the same point as the higher priced tours. Private guides are available and pay toilets are available at the drop off point. The hike is approximately 30-40 minutes from the drop off point. Gravel and inclined.
We had only one full day in Pompei, could have spent a another exploring the site. The experience was very moving regarding the fate of the town and the people who lived there. Better signage for the streets would be belpful. There are many sites with no information, though We realize the excavation is a work in progress.
Well worth a visit. One of the most important archaeological sites I have visited. Romans took control of Pompeii around 200 BC. On August 24, 79 AD, Vesuvius erupted, burying the nearby town of Pompeii in ash and pumice, killing around 3,000 people, the rest of the population of 20,000 people having already fled, and preserving the city in its state from that fateful day. Pompeii is an excavation (It: scavi) site and outdoor museum of the ancient Roman settlement. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail - everything from jars and tables, to paintings and people were frozen in time, yielding, together with neighbouring Herculaneum which suffered the same fate, an unprecedented opportunity to see how the people lived two thousand years ago.
If you plan to see the ruins only and not Mt. Vesuvius then I would not recommend staying in Pompeii. The train station (Circumvesuvia, not Trenitalia) is just across from the ruins and you can check any luggage with the attendant in the train station lower level. Easy to spend a few hours and get back on another train.
You really need to get there early or most of your time goes into walking with the masses. However I was disappointed how many of the "villas" or residence areas with the frescoes were blocked at 8:30 to 9:30 am since the specific site workers hadn't shown up to work yet. Also it was disappointing that the only thing in Pompeii are the ruins and for all the findings and most of the casts of the bodies you must travel to the archeological museum in Naples.
The Pompeii ruins are incredible. Very expansive and easy to get lost - do consider paying for a guide and spending about 4 hours. The modern town of Pompei is not that large, and we didn’t spend any time in the town itself.

The family who ran the hotel were very friendly and accommodating, the breakfast on offer was simple but good, with fresh coffee every morning. The room we stayed in was huge with a large balcony that overlooked Vesuvius and caught the sunset. The room was very clean. The car park was very secure and free. The location was great to get to both Pompeii and Herculaneum. There were some restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. Overall, we were delighted with our stay and found the hotel great value for money!
