Overlooking the Bay of Naples and mount Vesuvius, Sorrento is a colorful town in Campania. According to legend, it was the land of the sirens that had the power to enchant with their singing.
The town of Sorrento has gorgeous Renaissance and Baroque architecture, and a wide variety of restaurants, shops and cafés. Built around the 11th century, the Romanesque Cathedral of Sorrento is the city’s most important landmark. The charming Bell Tower with the beautiful majolica clock is the first thing you notice.

I did not enjoy Sorrento unfortunately. The amount of tourists was overwhelming - felt more packed than Venice and Florence, and you couldn't really get away to a side street. The air was thick with smog as cars are allowed to drive in the center and the mountains block good ventilation. Not much to do in Sorrento beyond beach clubs or shopping at stores that all look the same, or get out on a boat ride to Amalfi/Capri or on a trip to Pompeii.
Sorrento is very touristy, but the narrow alleys are interesting to stroll around. There is a lift down to the beach and ferry port. The duomo is well worth a visit, as is the marquetry museum. It's a good base to explore Pompeii, or to take a boat along the Amalfi coast. We went mid September and was surprised how busy it was. To get into our favourite restaurant La Cantinaccia del Popolo first sitting, you needed to join the queue about 40 minutes before it opened at 6.45pm. We also visited Capri from Sorrento, but really would not recommend it at all. It was overwhelmed by tourists and there were endless queues for the bus to Anacapri or for the funicular to Capri town. The round the island trip was fine for an hour, but we were so glad we had not chosen to visit the blue grotto, which required waiting for up to 2 hours for the 5 minutes in the cave. Anacapri was pleasant enough, but full of the usual shops
We really enjoyed our 9 day stay in Sorrento. It had everything we needed, great food, great shopping, cooking classes, food and wine tours quick access to other coastal locations and islands from the local port. We loved our evening walks through town and back to our B&B. We always felt safe.
Ancient city - started in 6th century BC, beautiful old architecture as well as dome modern buildings. Hundreds of restaurants with good quality food. We enjoyed every meal we ate. Lots of options for shopping..
I heard different opinions on where to stay on the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is the furthest away but in my opinion the most beautiful, it's beautiful inside and from afar unlike Positano where I did not enjoy the inside of the town but rather the view of it from far away. Although I will say, there was alot of Americans, take that as you will.
We stayed in Priora and went to Sorrento daily for connections to our tours/activities. We went to Positano/Amalfi/Ravello, Capri/Anacapre/Blue Grotto, cooking class, Sorrento city tour, Pompeii/Herculanem. Priora/Sorrento was less expensive and easy to travel to other destinations.
