Has a good range of shops and some reasonably priced long-stay parking. Interesting local museum by the river is well worth a visit. Many other seaside villages and other local towns easily reached from this area, including RHS Rosehall Gardens and a couple of NT properties worth a visit. We had a full week at The Spinney, Barnstable and did a different thing each day. Some very good local places to have dinner eg the Williams Arms and Squires Fish Restaurant in Braunton. As with many seaside towns in the UK, Barnstaple has seen better days. The high street is in decline, though there are some nice restaurants, Lush been one we visited twice with great sea food dishes. Barnstaple is a lovely town with plenty of places of interest, shops, bars, and restaurants. We had an evening meal at Clinton & Glass house would highly recommend. The food was excellent. Rock park was a fabulous place for walking our beloved dog Toby. Barnstaple is a good base to stay to explore North Devon. Town felt unloved and centre looked unattractive to me. Area round hotel and park was nicely kept and attractive. Barnstaple has many great features and I will return to...
Barnstaple has many great features and I will return to explore further. Wonderful market building and many pubs and restaurants at all price points. Lots of historical buildings and a delightful park area at the side of the river. Many points of interest fairly close by and good public transport routes feed the town. With some imaginative council effort there is room for improvement cosmetically to make the town a bit more appealing. I would start by reviewing parking charges. There is nothing more off putting than being ripped off £14 for 10 hours parking and all it does is perhaps ensure people drive away from the town for the day rather than spend their hard earned in and around the shops. These anti car tactics are one of the principle reasons the high street is in decline.Guest review byAnonymous

They let us in the room way before 3pm and we just chilled and had a pint whilst they cleaned it. Great value for money. We ordered the breakfast and they also let my father in law come for the very cheap breakfast (cooked beautifully and again, great value for money) so that saved him a fortune as his hotel breakfast was very pricey. Close to the shops, bars and restaurants of Barnstaple, the hotel's location is perfect. Beautifully decorated for Christmas, the hotel was warm and welcoming and spotlessly clean throughout. The staff were all cheerful, friendly and keen to help. The room was lovely (thanks for the upgrade!), and the dinner and breakfast were excellent with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.
