I will definitely stay here again next time I'm in town. Very quiet location, just off the main road. If you are driving, be prepared because there is one road in Santa Teresa and it is mostly dirt and full of potholes. Be sure to gas up in Cobano because there isn't a gas station. Drift Bar has amazing food and drinks. La Gilda Art Cafe breakfast was amazing.
Great surf destination. There are 3 beaches: Santa Teresa, Carmen and Mal Pais. ST beach is the most popular, rightfully so due to the soft sand and sandy bottom for surfing, and a bit more consistency. El Carmen has a few rocks, also nice for surfing and beach walks, it’s more tranquil. The whole town is one very long stretch of a road so be sure to stay where you plan on hanging out, otherwise it’s a long walk from one end to another. Lots of ATV rental options (quite expensive) and also taxis.
I was there at the end of November and it was still rainy season. The main road was a long strip of mud. Not an easy place to walk around as there are no sidewalks. You walk on the road with the cars, trucks, ATVs, motorcycles. The beach provides a beautiful place to walk. I had a birthday dinner at Tropica Latino which has tables right on the beach. Best margarita! Eat Streets is excellent. I had the best Frappuccino I've ever had there! And the arepas @ Good Munchies are fabulous. Best of all is Banana Beach which is like a beach club with day beds, music but without the cover. Loved it!
The beach is amazing, very clean but the waves and sea are dangerous, if you do not know how to swim well. Great for surfing. As a woman solo traveler, I felt very safe, since people look for each other, and there was the police coming over every now and the
Beautiful spot. The beaches are pristine and dramatic. Go during the week if possible as the town fills up too much on the weekends. The Main Street is crazy and walking in town seems stressful (to us). It’s full of young people and a very relaxed town. If you love nature, the beaches are incredible.
Santa Teresa is becoming quite popular, and the prices definitely reflect this. We were not there during high season but just after as rainy season started. The weather was still awesome 98% of the time and we got great beach days. The shopping is good but pricey - think Los Angeles prices for boutiques. We ate at Rocamar twice because the food was affordable, the sunsets unbeatable and the music fantastic. Very family-friendly. Banana Beach was a draw for the crowds but truthfully we had drinks (great) and calamari (not so good) and left because it was full of touristy folks looking for big box experiences, which we were not. We rented an atv for a day to head to Montezuma for the beach and waterfalls and ended up loving the shops and restaurants right on the water in that little place, so definitely do that on one of your days! We did the Isla Tortuga tour from our stay at Buena Onda and it was worth the cost considering they picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, provided snorkel gear, and fed us lunch and beers! Overall Santa Teresa was lovely. We were happy we did this stay for 6 nights and definitely would stay again. Be sure your accommodations are on the actual beach and/or you are aware of the hills going to your hotels! And finally, we as a late thirties couple with no kids didn't feel the need for a car and were happy to not have paid exorbitant amounts of money to rent one. We took a private shuttle from Liberia airport ($300 with tip for a 5 hour ride) to ST then another to Rio Perdido in Bagaches ($475 with tip) for a 4 day stay in the jungle and from there to the airport ($164). It was well worth not driving and we paid way less for three private cars than we would have done to drive. Santa Teresa overall was a great bougie beach town. If you're looking for less tourism Nosara and Montezuma might be worth looking into on Nicoya!
We stayed at Casa Cecilia for an intimate family get-together before our daughter's wedding elsewhere in Santa Teresa. The small, intimate feel of the place made us feel we had our own private home on the oceanfront. Comfortable lounge chairs, plentiful space and a beautiful beach right out front made for an idyllic stay. Didn't hurt that we could walk right next door to munch on tacos while watching the sun set either! The staff was most accommodating and fixed a lovely hot breakfast to order each morning. Highly recommended!
Santa Teresa Beach
You will not regret staying in this hostel, don't hesitate to book! It far exceeded my expectations and this was my favourite place I have stayed on my three month trip. The volunteers and staff were so friendly and good vibes, I stayed in the female dorm and the room was beautifully decorated and spacious. I rented a board and surfed every day, the town felt safe to walk alone and was a perfect size with some lively bars / nights. I love Santa Teresa, it is the best beach town in Costa Rica!
The location is really nice! A short walk to everything in Santa Teresa and very close to the beach! We liked the lush green garden at the lodge and the amazing view from our room! The staff at Funky Monkey welcomed us and made us feel like home! Special thanks to Guido, Antonella and Nacho! We would like to come back again!
The staff was just great! So friendly and helpful. The location was also great with the beach, restaurants, ATV and surf rentals, bakeries, ATMs and shops just around the corner! If you are looking for a nice and calm hotel near santa teresa/playa carmen this is the one!
The facilities look super fine and clean. feels like a new hotel. good vibes and good people. They had filtered cold water to fill your bottles which is a rare thing in Santa Teresa. I good very good fair through booking but it wasn't their ordinary prices.
