Well I studied in Luton so I had no choice but to visit.. if its gonna be your first time in Luton - DONT DO IT. For a driver its a horrible experience and for the scenery its most definitely not worth it.
Luton airport is a dump. Avoid it if at all possible. It is far too crowded and too small for the thousands who have to travel through it every day. The connection between the train station and the airport is not good. Especially problematic is the stairway between the train platform and the shuttle service to the airport. The elevator facility is inadequate.
We were only at the airport so we cannot really speak for the town as a whole but as you would expect the air quality was awful at the airport and there aren't many shops pf things to do at the airport.
It's not a city to visit, we just stayed there because it is quite close to London, Oxford and Cambridge, and we had our flight back from Luton airport. There is not much to do, though, and it doesn't feel really safe nor pleasant, we won't be coming back.
Luton is a great sleepover point with plenty branded hotels to choose from. Central London is 25 minutes easy reach from one of the three train stations, in the north, Centre, and south of the town. The wonderful countryside that surrounds the town is typically England. The town itself is an industrial town, with pleasant suburbs and a shopping Mall with all the typical brands. The Airport is a hub for all of Europe with all the Major low-cost airlines.
We stayed for one night our hotel was amazing (Hilton Garden Inn) but the town itself not much to do & a lot of scumbags around the town. Would not recommend bringing kids to the town saw a lot of odd characters.

Close enough to Luton airport that it was a cheap bus ride away and we were there in 10 minutes. It was really well put together, good breakfast, nice staff, newly renovated. All around it was a nice place to stop in for sleep before camping for the weekend! I would definitely recommend this to anyone going that wants a little upscale feel for a reasonable price.

Located in Luton town center near the mall and the interchange, London city centre can be reached with half an hour of train and Luton airport in 15 minutes with the bus. Perfect for a short stay of maximum two people. I was by myself, in town for work for three days so it was quite convenient for I had to go almost everyday to the airport. Good value.

Good location walking distance from airport. Also could pay to park our car at the hotel car park (we just arranged this at reception on arrival) while we were away for the week and the price was cheaper than any of the long term parking we checked so really convenient airport hotel. Rooms were clean bed comfy and nice shower.
