The Sunny Side of Croatia
Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centered around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and featuring limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soft drinks Pipi and Orela.

Lovely promenade - masses of bars and restaurants, great atmosphere in the evening, particularly. People promenading, very buzzy and busy, great for people watching. Huge choice of places to eat and drink all day. Not much to do in Split itself, but lots of places to visit from there - number 37 bus to Trogir (or better to get the ferry, it's quicker and much more pleasant!), day trip to Plitvice Lakes or Krka Lakes, ferry to Hvar Island (and get the bus to Stari Grad and climb the hill to the cross, then have a beer on the harbour front). Hvar Town has a lovely promenade - and quieter than Split, more chilled. Luxor bar and restaurant was a real find in the evening - live music, people sitting around the courtyard/atrium, really great vibe. An amazing place to explore but very busy as the height of the summer season. I would get up early to read all the interpretation boards dotted around the city centre while it was quiet. Split is a small yet historic city. The palace ruins are beautiful and very worth the visit. Most of the people working in bars and restaurants are friendly and helpful, but some are totally rude - don't take offense, just be patient. It is a beautiful little town, well worth visiting, lots of history, stunning scenery and a lovely vibe. If you just want to meander about, you can fill a couple of days, if you want to make use of the beaches and go further afield you could make it a longer stay.
