We were interested in the area because one of my mother’s favorite books was Under the Tuscan Sun. The hike to the home of the author, Frances Mayes, was breathtaking. The walled city was cozy and had everything we needed. We stayed at Casa Mia a Cortona. A nice home with a large bed upstairs and a twin bed in the lounge area. Great views. Town market Saturday morning.
Fiesta in the piazza just below our room was an exciting welcome. Friendly town folks with wonderful art and music all around. There are excellent dining options across wide range of preferences and prices. The history of this ancient city is proudly displayed. We walked everywhere took in the sites as well as the retreats. This is the place to relax and restore mind, body and spirit.
We found Cortona to be a wonderful, small hill town in Tuscany. The entire town was walkable, except from the very bottom of the hill (where there is free parking) to the main palazzo. This was a very steep hill and it takes some effort to make the walk. I am 71 and in good shape, and I was breathing pretty well making the walk from the bottom to the top.
Our trip was not just for Cortona - which needs several visits to appreciate its beauty and explore everything it has to offer fully. Comfortable shoes a must and follow the locals to the best restaurants (and there are many) We used Borgo Slomore as our base to explore more of the Tuscany and Umbria beauty and the villages throughout this area. Short hops to Montepulciano, Montacino, Arezzo, Perugia and Castiglione del Lago. Just a little farther to Todi and Spoleto
A beautiful old walled city perched high up on a hilltop. Unspoilt and quaint, there are lots of lovely little streets to explore. Some are quite steep! The views over the surrounding hills and countryside are simply stunning.
A beautiful medieval hilltop town with a wonderful rich history and so many places to see! you can sense and feel a real community spirit evident in daily transactions with the local people who made us feel so welcome. It is a wonderful place to just wander around and as it sits on a hilltop there are wonderful views across Tuscany which on a clear day you can see for miles including Lake Trasimeno.
The attention to detail everywhere was remarkable. The room was spacious, very comfortable and clean. Spa, sauna, steam in the room was delightful and our own private lounge patio on the back side of our room. There were ninja cleaners who somehow tidied up and refreshed constantly for you without ever seeing them. The grounds were lovely. The proprietor is an 8th or 9th generation owner and give his all to this place. Lunch by the pool was relaxing, there was a bountiful breakfast spread every morning and they offered a very haute cuisine in the evenings. There is an incredible ball room available if you want need one. The town at the top of the hill nearby was great for exploring, sightseeing, shopping and dining.
