Erice is an ancient village located at the top of a hill...
Erice is an ancient village located at the top of a hill overlooking Trapani with superb views all around. It is possible to drive up the long winding road or take a bus up the well surfaced and not narrow road. All parking is on the outskirts of the village at a cost. Do not try to drive through the very narrow, cobbled streets, you will have problems. It is possible to take the cable car to Erice from Trapani, a good choice if you are just visiting for the day. You can walk up to Erice from Trapani from NEAR the cable car station but not FROM the cable car station, initially on a steep, tarmac road leading to a dusty, gritty, track but it isn't well signed and if you decide instead to walk up the road it is a long way, around 12 km. The village itself is very interesting and it is possible to walk a complete circuit. All the streets are narrow, cobbled and uneven. There is a profusion of gift shops, very many selling the same ceramic souvenirs etc. There are many restaurants and cafes but be aware a majority of them close later in the afternoon when the village becomes almost empty so if you are staying overnight the few that are open can be busy. The view of the plain to the southeast, of Trapani, its famed salt flats, and of the sea was spectacular, the restaurant breakfasts and dinners excellent, the room comfortable and clean. Most of all, Antonio, the manager, was a really great and helpful person. His service to drive us and our luggage up from the parking lot (with an orienting sight-seeing narrative thrown in!) and around the narrow streets to the hotel, park our car and then bring us back to it after our stay was invaluable. Erice is a very charming town, and worth a visit, but only...
Erice is a very charming town, and worth a visit, but only if you're able to walk steep hills and cobblestones. Maria Grammatico's pastry shop was a highlight for us, as was just walking around the town. Do be sure to 1) download EasyPark or a similar parking-pay app before you go, and if you stay in one of the hotels overnight, be sure to also download WhatsApp as most of the smaller Italian hotels use that to communicate. All the food we had was great; prices were reasonable; not a lot of tourists, but even in early May, there were some. Very old town with many things to see.
Very old town with many things to see. Many restaurants for all kinds of food. Since Erice is high up in the mountains, there are few level areas. Great for keeping in shape! You cannot get lost. The community has a nice offer for 12 Euro to enter all churches and monuments in the village. It can easily keep you busy and running around for a day in the village. A bus from/to the village from Trapani is 2,90 Euro and takes about 45 min. The Funivia (cable car is 6,50 Euro and takes about 20 min + the local AST 21 or 23 bus to take you there for 1,40 Euro). I saved one cable car ride for the last evening just as an experience enjoying the sunset views and using it as a way to reach the village late. One of the host was very accomadating as we struggled to get up to erice from trapani, the cable car was temporarily shut and we struggled to get a taxi ( keep this in mind if youre planning a visit. Get a bus from port up to erice not too expensive we found out too late haha). Host however got his wife to drive us up had to pay abit over but was needed.
