Avalon Motel is a 5-minute walk from the start of the Hauraki rail trail. It offers free WiFi access and free on-site parking. Difficult to find because my GPS went to Jellicoe Lane not Jellicoe Crescent. I had to phone them.
Overlooking Thames and featuring beautiful sea views, Grafton Cottage & Chalets offers private chalets. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. Lovely garden, wondrous western sunset views over the valley, birdsong and flowers all around. Thames had a great Main Street area with good restaurants and s very laid back vibe.
Set in Te Puru, 3 minutes' walk from Thorntons Bay, 5.6 mi north of Thames and 21 mi from Coromandel Town, Pohutukawa Coast BnB features a sun terrace and views of the sea. Beautiful location, you have to sit on the deck while having your breakfast, so relaxing. Peter and Janet are very welcoming and you have a feeling like you're home quickly. Te Puru Beach Lodge is a 4.5 star, bed and breakfast style property with a garden, terrace and barbecue facilities. It is located on the Thames Coast, 7.5 mi from Thames and 19 mi from Coromandel... A wonderful treat of flounder for breakfast, cooked by Chef Dale👏Both Margaret and Dale couldn’t do enough to make our stay special, which it certainly was!
Located among beautiful landscaped gardens, Rapaura Watergardens features a seasonal restaurant which serves both breakfast and lunch. This is a fabulous place to go off-grid. Forget all your worldly business. Just enjoy the beauty of nature. The ambles through the watergardens and short trek to the waterfalls refresh the soul. Ferns, vines, rainforest and occasional kauri, are all practically at your doorstep. This is a wonderful base to explore the western Coromandel peninsula, from Thames to the north. The drive through the mountains on the Tapu-Coroglen road is spectacular, though remember to be cautious on the gravel. The cottage is roomy and homey. Good cooking facilities for those who like to eat in, and the option of dinner prepared in arrangement with Sacha and Sally. Can't wait to return.
Love Thames I used to visit when I was young but have moved to the USA. Always love returning to visit my family that lives here. Love the bakery stores! Small town for walking around and people are friendly.
When we got to the Regional Park we found out that the Pinnacles trail had been disrupted by weather and was closed. The ranger at the headquarters was not very encouraging for local walks. We started walking anyway and met up with a maintenance ranger who was so much more helpful and set us on our way to hike a couple of lookouts. We should have checked the status of the trails before we got there. We probably would have changed our plans.
I liked the town, but probably I would have liked it more , the more I found out. Coffee shops were good, but I think it needs a few good restaurants there. There are a few really good tough hikes in the area. I think there is a bit of history there too.
Thames is a pleasant drive from Auckland airport and a good place to start a driving tour of the Coromandel Peninsula. There is an interesting Street market on Saturday morning and plenty of reasonable eating places. It is a compact little town with a Paknsave supermarket if you have chosen self catering. The drive to Coromandel town is unlike anything you are likely to find elsewhere. Views across Hauraki Gulf are splendid on a fine day. Beaches are a little too stony but there are plenty of rock pools to explore at low tide. For the more energetic there is a lovely bush walk starting from Victoria Street by the holiday park.
Spending a day or at least stopping in Thames for lunch is highly recommended. Lots of shops and restaurants conveniently located down town. I also HIGHLY recommend staying at Nightingale Falls Farm Stay!
Thames was a stopover point for us. We went for a nice stroll before enjoying a nice feed of fish & chips at "The Wharf". The Kumara chips were awesome. The town seemed really quiet, but has many facilities, shops etc. Well worth a look. Next time we need to stay a bit longer to discover a bit more of the area.

Such a well-provisioned place. It felt like coming home! Private yet near the owners, if you need anything. Gorgeous sunset from the patio. The breakfasts were so delicious, served by Lynn and Mark personally at whatever time you want to eat. The service was above and beyond expectations of a B&B. Thames is a cute little town with plenty of restaurants. It’s easy to get to anywhere on the Coromandel peninsula. I’d recommend this place in a heartbeat.

Fantastic hosts, so welcoming and it was lovely to be greeted with tea and cake on our arrival. Pauline was able to advise us on where to visit in Coromandel peninsula- we stopped here for 1 night on our way to Whitianga- and it was fascinating talking to her about her hiking experiences. Amazing location high above Thames with glorious views from deck. Highly recommend.

Also the kitchenette and sitting area was well stocked. They have thought of everything to make your stay so comfortable. Breakfast was delicious!

Have you stayed at Motel 6, or Super 8? Basically the same, but with a small kitchen and more clean. Decently clean for my standards, which are moderately high. Bed sheets and towel very clean. Gave us free milk and cookies! Just kidding, pretty sure the last guests forgot them in the fridge.

Great apartment in a great location in Thames. It was directly across the road from where I was working. Communication was great and it was really easy to check in even when I arrived later than anticipated.

Friendly owners. Convenient location both for the small town and as a gateway to the peninsula. Well equipped rooms with all the amenities needed. Well above the quality of an average New Zealand motel.

The location was fantabulous- very unique overlooking the Firth of Thames. Mr Scott and Katherine were so warm and cooperative. We had a lovely evening chit chatting with them by the bonfire

This is an adequate two star hotel. The only redeeming thing is sunset. Sitting on your little deck and with an unobstructed view across the bay of the sunset is great.

We loved our visit to Cotswold Cottage. The setting is absolutely beautiful as is the inn itself, a home over 100 years old but updated perfectly. Our hosts Garth and Adrienne were wonderful, warm and inviting and very helpful in planning our itinerary. And the home made custom breakfast was delicious. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Wonderful hosts, super friendly and helpful. Great cooked breakfasts. Thorold House is quiet, private but wonderfully accessible to the Coromandel peninsula. The room was clean, comfy and very quiet. The private garden area was great to sit in and enjoy the evening.

Great place to stay. Swimming hole on the creek was a bonus since the pump on the pool was broken. But owner said part was on order. Would recomend this to friends.
