Faro is the picturesque capital of the Algarve region, offering colourful streets and buildings, Moorish influence, and typical Portuguese charm. It is encompassed by the lagoon of Ria Formosa Natural Park, and offers wide beaches, a laid-back atmosphere, and a vibrant nightlife.
Occupied by Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and once an important Roman harbour and Moorish culture capital, it was almost flattened by the 1755 earthquake. Happily, the historic centre survived and is today one of best preserved in Algarve. Choosing a hotel in Faro’s Old Town will allow you to have a more authentic Portuguese experience.
The long, sandy beach of Praia de Faro is 7 km from the city, and the beach on Barreta Island –also known as Deserta - is probably the most tranquil in the region. Hotels near the beach in Faro and the surrounding towns of Olhão, Tavira, Quinta do Lago, Quarteira and Vilamoura, are all excellent ways to enjoy sunny Portugal.
Faro International Airport offers connections throughout Europe, and the city also offers ferry, railway, and bus links. Whether you need a beach resort or a hotel near Faro Airport, check out the wide offer available on Booking.com!
A wonderfully chilled out vibe to this walkable city, which offers old town and modern experiences. Food choice amazing. Transport to nearby towns and beaches very accessible and easy to locate. Weather just gorgeous (mid - late September) Municipal market excellent. Tavira elegant Restaurants all very decent and good value for money Get to Culatra! Estoi to be avoided
Since our previous visit in 2009 Faro has changed a great deal. It's now more a destination in its own right rather than just the place where the airport is. There are less derelict buildings and the place is livelier and more prosperous looking. There are more bars and restaurants but some real treasures have been lost - the wonderful Fim Do Mundo restaurant is no more and the pleasant gardens with fountains have been displaced by a car park. Having said that, it's a great place to spend a few days with great beaches just a short boat ride away.
We only saw a small part of Faro as we were only there for 2 nights for an early morning flight. It was nice going down the pedestrianised street past the bars and restaurants down to the marina and only a short walk to the old town.
We arrived in Faro by train from Lisbon and it was pretty easy to walk to our accommodation with our luggage. There were many delicious restaurants and one that stood out was Brazilian, however I don't remember the name. We enjoyed walking through Faro's old town, the marina and looking in the many shops.
Faro was a lovely city to visit. It felt safe as a solo traveller, and the restaurant/shop staff were all friendly and welcoming. There was a lovely feeling to the town, exploring the old and new parts, and discovering Roman remains and the Skull church is well worth a visit. I took the ferry to Faro Beach which was great (although don't get the last ferry back as there will be too many waiting!). If you want other beaches, book in advance as the locals like to book up and enjoy!
After spending 10 days in Lagos, Algarve, Faro came as a little anticlimax.... The cathedrals we visited were nice, Faro beach is decent but not as charming as the various other beaches in the Algarve. The train tour of the city was so short, and it solidified why we would not be returning to this city again other than for landing at the airport which is a real gem. Faro airport is well run, clean, a really beautiful first entry into the region. The airport staff were super friendly and efficient, the airport itself is well designed and measures up to the best regional airports in the world. We had our last dinner in Portugal here in Faro, the food here is really not as good as in Lagos which was rather disappointing. Faro prices are the highest in the Algarve and the food quality not as good. We had authentic local dishes and our son a burger, but they just couldn't get it right.. If you can help it only eat in Lagos. The restaurant staff was very service driven, polite and friendly. The police in Faro are also top notch, very good at what they do and super helpful. The best thing about Faro is its people...
