Faro is the picturesque capital of the Algarve region, offering colourful streets and buildings, Moorish influence, and typical Portuguese charm. It is encompassed by the lagoon of Ria Formosa Natural Park, and offers wide beaches, a laid-back atmosphere, and a vibrant nightlife.

Occupied by Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and once an important Roman harbour and Moorish culture capital, it was almost flattened by the 1755 earthquake. We wanted to be back closer to the airport for the day of our departure and wanted to explore Faro based on doing some research about things to do in the marina area. The three days we were there was a good amount of time for us to explore. There is lots to do. Many restaurants, shops, landmarks and historical sites. The marina area is very nice.

We stayed in Old Town the accomodations we lovely, the location was great, their was a lot to do in the square, several restaurants, all delicious foods and music. History abound, train station, and airport, it makes traveling easier. Centrally located in the Algarve.

Vibrant city, felt very safe there, lots of varied restaurants catering for all price ranges. Outdoor music down by the marina always entertaining. Lots of history. We like to eat in the local restaurants found in many of the side streets. We visit the Anchor bar which is quaint, has a lovely playlist and the lady serving who is there for years is always so friendly, offering plenty local information.

Faro was nice. The boat rides to the beach were fun, good choices of places to eat and drink, people were nice and friendly, Fun things to walk to and see. A good place to go and relax and spend money.

Faro was a welcome change from the intense crowds in Lisbon and Porto. It was also an easy pedestrian walking area with lots of shops and restaurants, though, for a weekend, many were closed. But Pigs and Cows Restaurante, GO! SO good. We were also near the old city which was pleasant to stroll through. And NO HILLS!

First of all it is the people , so friendly and helpful . The old town is a must and I am not telling you where I ate because it was so good I want to be able to get a table next time! Bus from airport to the seafront is only two euros eighty cents . I like to wander around and talk to people and hear their stories which in Faro their are happy to do (do not even try that in London!). A beautiful grandma with 4 little mutts actually picked lemons from her tree and gave them to me for free . Meditate out on some rock or quiet coast and just breathe the cool salt laden air . Watch the ships and sail boats go by like a moving masterpiece and discover stuff . I do not use a cell phone or any form of social media so for me I like to keep it real ! I have made so many friends (real friends not, well FB friends) across dinner tables and bars (OK at an oyster bar I got invited to a glass of wine from the person either side of me ! OK and I am a seventy plus old Englishman not a supermodel out alone getting "Hit on!" Faro is for real and now my go to place unlike some places I used to hang out where walls are adorned with" tourist go home" . LOVE IT!

Faro is overlooked among the places to stay in the Algarve. We stayed here for many reasons - mostly logistics as our hotel was a one-minute walk from the bust station and five minutes to the train station. We were surprised at how much there was to see and do. Definitely worth a couple days to check it out.

First impressions are so important, as we walked from the train station to our hotel, about two blocks, there was so much filth and garbage on the street that I wondered if workers were on strike. Walking around after arrival, from our hotel to the nearby shopping center, about a mile away, the streets were just as dirty and unkempt as the place around the train station. Looks bad for such a great area as The Algarve is

We stayed 3 nights. Faro is a bit of a sleepy town, but lots to see still in the daytime. We took a ferry to Praia de Faro, went to both the Municipal Market and a small farmer's market near the Chapel of Bones (this Chapel was the only thing we didn't get a chance to see as it was closed for a funeral the day we had available). We went to the cathedral with the bell tower, and up the tower, explored the waterfront area, shopped, dined, and spent one day in Olhão (highly recommend taking the short train ride there for a day trip). Staying close to the train station was a good move as it gave us easy access for travel and was still walking distance to everything. I would also recommend the Faro airport - it was so much easier coming in via Faro than on our way home via Lisbon! Avoid the Lisbon airport at all costs.

Having just left the business of Lisbon, our visit to Faro was a breath of fresh air. Small and walkable. Good restaurant options. A great indoor market where locals sell everything; fresh fish, olives, fruit and vegs, flowers, breads. We felt like we were seeing real people; interacting with the locals.

There are direct flights to Faro from Toronto, Canada, and I have used it as a launching pad for trips to other parts of Portugal and Spain twice. But I really fell in love with Faro. The heritage sites, beaches, graffiti art, sunsets at the harbour, walking tour of the old city, and FOOD! will bring me back. Adega Nova has fabulous grilled fish you choose yourself and helpful service for newcomers. Great ambiance and close to the hostels and buses. (Cash only!). As a solo older woman traveller I felt totally comfortable walking the old streets at night - so much activity and happy activity among all the establishments.

Faro is a lovely little town, easy to aces by train from Lisbon or plane. There is wonderful seafood and coffee and plenty of little sites to enjoy in Old Town! I rented a car and was able to drive over to Lagos and enjoyed a nice beach day there as well!

Faro has many interesting facets that should appeal to most travelers. It has a long and varied history, a lively waterfront scene, and a gorgeous beach a short ferry ride away. I would certainly recommend coming in May when the crowds have yet to materialize, and the weather is ideal.

I had only five days in the area so I stayed two nights in Faro at the beginning and at the end. The other days I traveled to the other smaller cities with public transportation and it was great. I love the culture, the food, the nature, the people were always relaxed and friendly. I also found it very inexpensive and simply very pleasantly surprised. I definitely want to come back and spend more time and travel to the other cities and do more water activities as the beaches and the ocean were great.

Faro is a city of contrasts, old and new, pretty streets, graffiti in places, derelict buildings amongst the habitable ones. Tourist spots like the marina area, shopping streets, old city were great and the food and drink venues plentiful, good quality and fair pricing. Markets, street entertainment and craft fairs were everywhere during our visit. Visits to historical buildings were only a few euros per person and children often free. There seemed to be ample car parking, much of it free, and public transport was plentiful. Many operators provided sightseeing boat trips and there are regular ferries to the beaches. Nowhere in Faro escapes the airport traffic but you soon get used to it. The public parks were well maintained.

After spending 10 days in Lagos, Algarve, Faro came as a little anticlimax.... The cathedrals we visited were nice, Faro beach is decent but not as charming as the various other beaches in the Algarve. The train tour of the city was so short, and it solidified why we would not be returning to this city again other than for landing at the airport which is a real gem. Faro airport is well run, clean, a really beautiful first entry into the region. The airport staff were super friendly and efficient, the airport itself is well designed and measures up to the best regional airports in the world. We had our last dinner in Portugal here in Faro, the food here is really not as good as in Lagos which was rather disappointing. Faro prices are the highest in the Algarve and the food quality not as good. We had authentic local dishes and our son a burger, but they just couldn't get it right.. If you can help it only eat in Lagos. The restaurant staff was very service driven, polite and friendly. The police in Faro are also top notch, very good at what they do and super helpful. The best thing about Faro is its people...

We did a WINTER visit to Faro. Lovely town, nice waterfront boat slips & restaurants to walk-in the evening. Beaches in Faro are NOT walking distance to the town.. a 20 minute drive to the nearest beach, or a bus is required. As well, hiking trails are not plentiful in this area as they are in the rest of the Algarve.

Lovely city in the Eastern Algarve. Easy to find your way about. Some lovely reasonably priced restaurants. Lots of boat trips available from the marina. This is a good base for exploring the Eastern Algarve. We used public transport the whole time. There is a train that goes as far as the Spanish border in the east and as far as Lagos in the west. There is a train also that goes to Lisbon. Buses go to many locations up and down the coast as well as inland and further afield.

Faro in January is fairly deserted, which is great for avoiding crowds. The city has a few historic buildings and ancient walls, along with a good number of cafés and restaurants. Its core is relatively small and can be explored on foot in a couple of days. During most of our stay, the sky was a beautiful blue, though it was a bit chilly when walking in the shade.

Beautiful town with lots of activities and restaurants. Really recommend renting a bike and exploring the salt marshes surrounding the area. Centre and old town are very beautiful to walk around. Sushi restaurant Kaira is amazing and brunch place yellow bourbon

It’s only a smaller area. We stayed in Faro and did day trips elsewhere. However, the town centre is lovely. We did spend a day walking around, there was just enough to take in with lots of nice places to eat. We would also come back in the evenings after our day trips and enjoy the sunset at the marina. Public transport is easy and affordable. All restaurants we went to were affordable and absolutely delicious. The cathedral in the old town is gorgeous, especially the view up top. We recommend wandering the outside streets and soaking in Portuguese culture. And taking a few evenings to watch the sunset at Praia de Faro, or the marina.

Faro is a good place to go as a jump off for other areas in Portugal, the Lemon Tree Stay is in a great location and is within walking distance to everything your need. The breakfast was a good solid start in the morning, by the 4th day of our stay, it would have been nice not to have the same food. We stayed 6 days....
