From our beautiful accommodation, Sunlight House, to all the cafes, bars, marina and beautiful quaint churches and buildings, Faro is lovely. The locals are all so friendly and helpful. It feels really safe and even in mid winter there is plenty to do and see. The boat trip on Ria Formosa was outstanding and I even braved a paddle in the sea. Food is varied and so are the prices. We mainly ate in the smaller cafes, bars and restaurants which are real value for money but did have a blow out meal in O Castelo with its beautiful views to finish off our holiday. Travel isn't the easiest around Faro, but if you don't need to travel there is plenty to do in Faro itself. Our public transport bus back to the airport just didn't materialize but luckily we shared a taxi with another couple which worked out at about the same price !! We went to the museum for a Fado recital which was moving and wonderful. Oh and we didn't get to see "Bone Chapel" because it was always firmly locked although we went in winter "opening times" - oh well, there will definitely be a next time :-)
Faro in January is warm enough to sit outside at lunchtime and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine. There aren't too many tourists and the local people are very friendly and most speak very good English. There are interesting museums and historical sites and good transport links to local towns by train and bus. The markets are worth visiting just to see all the varieties of fish. The city is small enough to walk everywhere. Centenario restaurant has Fado music on a Friday night and our favourite spot for lunch was the cafe by the marina. For those interested in wildlife the estuary has storks, spoonbills and other wading birds.
Faro, Faro, Faro, land of dreams far in the distant past, history of trade and worldliness, legends and incantations. Great food, great sea food, great Fado, great spirit in its people. Arts, lovely streets, architecture, and parks. Poetry, literature, antiquity. Even the pizzas were good.
I went solely for a relaxing trip away from the snow in UK. There was a few nice places and good prices for activities. Its maybe more of a relaxing trip for the older generation, not many people aged between 18-25. Travelling was expensive. Had to use express buses, and cost near 10 euros each return around algarve, very off putting to travel around again. Favourite place to eat and drink was Alef Burger Bar!!!! 10/10 Favourite day was Kayaking through rio formosa.
Mmmmn! Not cut out this moment to write much. Faro is a city to behold. Unfortunately i didn't stay long enough to visit round the city. I love the quiet and warmth of the city and the locals. I had fish meal at a restaurant (Restaurante 2 Irmãos) that generated into argument due to miscommunication but resolved. It's relatively easy to get around with numerous interlocking streets. Sincerely Faro doesn't compare much to other places of interest i have visited l, but it's quite peaceful, loving and serene.
I was pleasantly surprised by the city - compact, with a beautiful old town and great restaurants and sights (don't miss the Chapel of Bones at the Carmo Church!), Faro is definitely worth a return visit.
Faro
Excellent location esp for early departure from the airport. All the rental car offices are in the vicinity of this hotel. Ample parking available free of charge and without the need for a reservation. The on-site restaurant is also fairly decent. Rooms are comfortable and clean. AC was effective. TV with numerous channels in almost all major EU languages. I requested for a room on the quiet side which was great as the one side of the hotel faces the artery linking the airport. A nice discovery was a family run restaurant at a 6 minutes walk from the hotel across the road- MN restaurant. Many petrol stations are close by which was also helpful for returning the car.
Faro
We used spacious terrace for fresh, local breakfast and dinner (bought at the nearby marketplace, cooked at the fully-equiped kitchen). The location is perfect for a quick walk to the old town, marketplace, bakery, farmacy, mini-mercado. Everything you need and it’s quiet. I took a surfboard with me and it was perfect as I could place it easily in the room and hang out the wetsuit on terrace. The host - Inês, is a wonderful, heartwarming and helpful person. So you’re in good hands. For the value, it’s wonderful.
Fantastic location, 2 minutes walk to marina, 5minutes walk to bus/train station. Aqua Ria is located in the heart of Faro, very clean place, comfortable bed, great facility . Absolute pleasure to stay in Aqua Ria. Will recommend for everybody. !!!!!!!
