This place is simply brilliant. Outstanding view, private location plus great kitchen, lounge, balcony and bedrooms. Whilst it's a little on the expensive side, for our long weekend away we were happy we paid the extra.
The museum is closed Mon-Tue. We went on Wednesday.
The museum is closed Mon-Tue. We went on Wednesday. Fairly small. The town is small with some beautiful views. Grassy Hill has very nice 260 degree view. The botanic gardens are lovely. Finch beach was unexpectedly pretty. The Mulligan Highway from Cairns is in superb shape.

Cooktown was not what I expected, it was far better than I was expecting.
The town is very clean and tidy, great amenities and services. October just starting to a bit humid. Winter would be a better time to visit.

Cooktown is a a layback quiet town which has become more popular with tourists over the 20 years we have visited. It it a Southerners Haven May to October. If you are into Fishing the Charters out of Cooktown are among the best in Australia!
If not, then it is simply a restful no pressure town with very friendly locals who are only so pleased that you have come to visit their little paradise!

It's a long drive from Cairns on a very good road (allow 4 hours), and there's not a great deal to do once you get there. There's a nice river-front walk, fishing jetties, playground for the kids, and a new water-park towards the end of the bay. Some nice pubs and restaurants to choose from, (Cooktown is noted for its seafood), and the usual souvenir shops. The museum is interesting but quite expensive at $25 per adult admission; worth it if you want to see the anchor from Capt. Cook's Endeavour and how it was retrieved. The sunset cruise on the Endeavour river is worth doing; byo drinks, but glasses, ice and a nice cheese platter is included, and Nick's commentary is worth the price of the cruise in itself.
The Grassy Hill lookout is quite spectacular but you'll need to hold on to your hat as it gets very blustery up there, and the Botanic Gardens near Finch Bay are also worth a visit.
If you're based in Cairns and just want to see Cooktown to tick it off your "been there, done that" list, I'd suggest heading north towards Port Douglas then veer off to Mount Molloy is a better way than the usual recommended route via Mareeba. Don't even try going via the Bloomfield Track through the Daintree unless you have a big 4WD.

What I like about Cooktown is the laid back atmosphere of the place and all locals are friendly and willing to help you. The food is good in the pubs or clubs and served in a timely manner. The view from the lookout is great and it's a nice stroll around the botanic gardens. It's a great place to getaway and do very little but mix with the locals.
Recommend for weekend trip.
Our room was extremely clean. The hotel was very well sited to enable walking to a lot of historic sites in Cooktown. Lovely green palms gave us privacy on the 'shared' balcony. The pool area looked fantastic - shaded areas available. Excellent meal at the local Bowls Club and at a little fish and chip shop (nearest to the mouth of the Endeavour River). Ensure you visit the amazing Botanic Gardens - fabulous coffee & cake there too! Great, friendly staff at reception.
We cannot thank Ellana and John enough for sharing their little piece of paradise with us. From answering our pre arrival questions, to calling us on arrival and checking in throughout our stay. The house is sparkling clean, well equipped with everything you need, the comfiest beds and gorgeous deck area with water views, the perfect spot to watch the sunset. We could not fault our stay and highly recommend their place for anyone visiting Cooktown. We will be back !
Gecko House was fantastic, Diana was a wonderful host, very friendly and knowledgeable about the area.
The room was clean and had everything we needed, the communal area is great, good facilities to hang out, cook your own meals, have a few drinks etc. We were very impressed, and the price was very reasonable.
We look forward to returning to Cooktown & will definitely stay here again.
Thanks Gecko House for a great stay :)
Our room was beautifully presented and the wide verandahs made a very pleasant spot to sit outside. The gardens were beautifully kept and waking up to sounds of bird life was a plus. Sue and Tony were amazing and made our stay very special. Breakfast was incredible and Sue cooked a delicious meal on our second night. A great place to stay and can’t wait to stay again on our next visit to Cooktown
Di & Andrew are the most hospitable hosts. They are extremely friendly & helpful, willingly providing us with lots of information to help us make the most of our time in Cooktown. The rooms are beautifully appointed and include some thoughtful touches to make your stay feel special. The swimming pool was an added delight after our day of exploring this lovely historic town on foot.
Although the resort was 15Km out of Cooktown, one would need a vehicle to visit Cooktown anyway. The surroundings were exceptional and we were greeted with coffee and cake on arrival. On one night we took the availability of dinner at the resort. It was nice to be with the hosts Sue and Tony to hear about local events in Cooktown.
This is a gorgeous comfortable apartment with true “tropical styling”! The apartment is upstairs with a lovely veranda on two sides. The louvres in every room were wonderful, allowing the cool breeze to flow through. Thank you, Margo, for your warm welcome to Tropical Styling and to Cooktown.
The location in the rainforest was beautiful, and the cabin was very private. Although it's not right in Cooktown the property is only a few minutes drive out of town and was well worth it. We were warmly greeted by the owner who was very friendly and took us to our rooms.
A very comfortable self contained unit in a rural setting. Spacious with a dedicated areas for the living room and kitchen and a verandah looking out into the bush. Although a little distance out of town it is only a drive of less than five minutes.
Beautiful and large house, very well located in Cooktown. Rooms are large and nice, enjoyable terrace with view on the Endeavour river. Choice to use a ceiling mounted fan or air conditioning, which is very appreciated!
Our hosts Di and Andrew were most welcoming. Filled out us in on all Cooktown and surrounds has to offer. We will definitely stay at Gecko lodge on our next trip to Cooktown.
The location, cleanliness, travelling information around the local area, historical information books on coffee table, ginger nut biscuits and a lot of other little details.
very cosy, clean and well located.
all necessary amenities you’d expect in a high class hotel and even more
(chocolate eggs was a nice gesture for our Easter gateway)
The space, the facilities, the bed, the VIEW!!! … the laid back vibes and cool decor… provided you have a car, in our opinion this IS the place to stay In Cooktown.
