FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra is a great medium sized city with lots of things to do. It has all of the tourist attractions like Parliament, Museums, Art Galleries etc as well as some beautiful natural attractions and scenic drives only a short distance on the outskirts of the city. It has many great restaurants and shopping centres. There is good public transport.

Canberra is home to national treasures including the War Memorial, Parliament House, National Museum and the National Gallery. The central city area is based on Lake Burley-Griffen and provides very pleasant backdrop to significant monuments and buildings. We noted that since our last visit that night life in the central city area has improved greatly due to more community art displays and dining places.

Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.

Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors. I visited the Australian War Memorial, Museum of Australian Democracy, Portrait Gallery, Australian Archives, and National Gallery. I used the public bus system to get around. Ensure that you check the bus timetable, as buses do not run very frequently.

Lots of things to see - Museum, art gallery etc, all close to each other. Some things are further afield and worth seeing, so a car is very useful/necessary. I discovered the buses don't take cash and I would have to apply for a travel card 7-10 days in advance to get it in the mail! They don't take credit cards either (apparently that is coming in November 2024, but not much use to me when my friends weren't able to give me a lift as planned!) I can't believe a city that wants visitors makes it IMPOSSIBLE to go anywhere by bus or light train!

From check in to checkout, the staff were amazing. Service was top notch. The hotel is just a picture. It's in perfect condition and super clean. No strange smells, no worn carpet or furniture. The king room was beautiful and the marble bathroom was fit for royalty. Secure undercover parking was free during our visit. Restaurant was on point as was the food and wine list. Again, staff were very attentive. The bar was cosy with a log fire burning. Highly recommend the Hyatt Canberra.

This place was just amazing. Had everything you could expect from a good AirBnb, at Booking.com pricing. I’m actually very impressed with how homely it was, and accommodating for my little family. Quite a small living area but we weren’t there much in the day as there was a lot to do in walking distance. Had a high chair, porta cot and a pretty good coffee machine for the early mornings with the baby. 😅 We travel a fair bit and this place really impressed me. Very happy customer.

Excellent location five minutes' walk to Civic (CBD), with cafes and restaurants nearby. Easy parking in basement (there's a fee for parking but that is pretty common in central Canberra). Spacious, clean room. Upper floors away from Northbourne Avenue have the quietest rooms. It's not the cheapest hotel in town but it's the one we keep returning to.

These generous sized one bedroom apartments are well equipped and located in the heart of the buzziest part of Canberra. It's great that venues of this type are dog friendly, which is all too rare. Security parking is good and well priced. Rooms are serviced daily which is often not the case in apartment hotels. We'll definitely return here!

You get what you pay for. This hotel is conveniently located at the main road in Canberra's north. The majority of guests seem to be business travellers on limited budget, and so it the atmosphere. All good for a stopover on a long drive, less suitable for a romantic vacation.
