FAQs about hotels in Shanghai

A Beacon of Modern China

A beacon of 21st-century China, Shanghai is modernizing at an electrifying rate. Nowhere is this more evident than the skyscraper-punctuated Pudong commercial district. The most distinct - the Oriental Pearl Tower - has a ball at the top and bottom and has fabulous city views. A number of towers also twist as they go up – a feat of contemporary engineering.

This side of the city also houses Shanghai Pudong International Airport, while Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is over the Huangpu River in the Puxi district. An area of older and less dominating buildings, Puxi features the elegant Bund area whose varied architecture includes a surprising array of Art Deco.

With a choice of shopping centers and small shops beneath brightly lit neon signs just like Chinatowns across the world, Shanghai shopping is fantastic.

Other must-see Shanghai attractions include the wonderful Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple. For a break from the hustle and bustle, head to the Yuyuan Gardens, the beach or peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town in the west.

Whether you choose one of the Shanghai hotels, apartments or hostels, take time to go to a tea house, a Chinese institution. Also worth sampling are Shanghai hairy crab, steamed dumplings and the freshwater fish so popular with locals.

Not sure what I expected from Shanghai - it is large and sprawling and has something for everyone. Stylish cafes, restaurants, lanes and curiosity shops. Large shopping avenues and the Bund was crazily busy for sunset. The Tanzifeng lanes area was great for small shops and cocktails. The Temples were intact and well worth visiting. The ultra modern shopping malls with pure luxury...the didi taxi service. We discovered some beautiful gardens in the city, great for a rest during the midday heat!

Shanghai is a must-visit city when traveling to China.

Shanghai is a must-visit city when traveling to China. It is a truly modern, exceptionally clean, and well-organized destination. While it can be somewhat expensive, it offers remarkable diversity — both in terms of tourist attractions and in places to enjoy local cuisine, which here tends to be slightly more Westernized than in the rest of China.

Shanghai is a great beautiful mix of old world and new.

Shanghai is a great beautiful mix of old world and new. As a tourist I was shocked that I could not use google, social media or even access my emails. This made it impossible to find my way around, WeChat is great but it took me two days to realise I could search for cafes and whatnot on WeChat but even then there was no map. I wanted to go to Lian Quan Da bathhouse which I found on WeChat but could not find a way to get there. I also wanted to attend a meeting and could not contact the host to attend. These foibles make Shanghai an exasperating place to visit for a foreigner. Download a navigable map which I heard has been developed, WeChat and other things PRIOR to leaving- I could not even confirm my Sydney airport pickup with my friend as emails would not work! I printed out the addresses of flea markets and then discovered that I could not find my way to any of them without a functional English map. It has made me question whether or not to return as it adds a layer of difficulty to everything you do. I am vegetarian and knew there were several restaurants nearby to Jian Temple which has its own metro station so that was one bonus! But the WeChat not having a map meant I could not go searching for other places I might discover whilst there. Also the over use of single use plastics in Shanghai was shocking! They need to do more to reduce the plastic waste given the population numbers!

During this trip, I explored many of the must-see attractions such as Yu Yuan Garden, the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Ancient City, Wukang Mansion, St. Ignatius Cathedral, the Chocolate Factory, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Shanghai Library, East Nanjing Road, 1000 Trees, Disneyland, and more. I truly enjoyed every moment. I spent an unforgettable 7 days in Shanghai, full of wonderful memories. Thank you, Shanghai!

In terms of location this is as good as it gets in Shanghai. Metro access under 2 minute walk. Direct access to Nanjing road, short distance to people square and tons of places. The rooms are comfortable although not very big. The breakfast is the best I have had in China and is well worth that of a high-end 5 star hotel. Bath and shower have strong water pressure and instant hot water.

Location was excellent, right next to the metro station that has direct connections to the Railway Station and Airport. City sightseen bus stop is only few meters away, which is handy if only visiting the city shortly. Restaurants and shopping in the immediate vicinity. Hotel is old and historical, locating Shanghais zero point. The breakfast was diverse, which was enjoyable.
