I have an interest in ancient Roman history (from reading the novel by Robert Harris) and on that basis I ended up spending two days at the site (not one as originally planned). I think even spending a full day there 9am-7pm would exhaust all but the most dedicated traveller, given the heat in peak Summer (when I travelled). Also, bring some decent footwear: the narrow paved areas on each side of the street mean you have to keep jumping off to walk along the road itself which has very irregular stones which are a trip hazard. Gets busy, lots of tour buses. I didn't go as part of an organised tour, but what I did get and found useful was the audio tour guide thing that you can purchase from the visitor centre office before you go in. This provides basic information on each building once you key in the number. There is water available on site that you can use to fill up a bottle. Cafe on site also but was so busy, I didn't even think of joining the queue. I paid the extra 6 Euro for the visit to the villas, outside the main site and thought it was worth it. In fact I couldn't believe that the building I was walking through was over 2000 years old, it looked from the outside like 50 years at the most.Guest review bygraham001United Kingdom - 10.0

We arrived at 8.30am and queued outside the amphitheatre entrance gate for entrance to the site. Then very short and quick queue to purchase our tickets. We only wanted to visit the amphitheatre and theatres so paid €18 each. (More expensive tickets include access to villas) This was a good time to arrive as not too busy. Visiting the Scavi di Pompeii was an absolutely exciting and deeply meaningful experience. Walking among the ruins, I was truly impressed by the scale and preservation of the ancient city. The audioguide was an excellent companion — it allowed me to fully enjoy the visit and vividly imagine how people lived here before the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Beyond the archaeological site itself, I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth of the local people in the city — everyone I met was incredibly pleasant and helpful, which made the trip even more special. Pompeii is not just a historical site; it’s a place that brings the past to life in a way that is both fascinating and moving. Pompei is an amazing place to visit.
Pompei is an amazing place to visit. A day at the ruins isn't quite enough but do book a guide to show you the most interesting places. If possible book your stay in Pompei that coincides with a concert at the amphitheatre. We saw Bryan Adams there and what an awesome experience that was. We also went to Herculaneum, again, another must see. We booked a table at 'The Roof' (see photo). What amazing views from up there. We were in Pompei for 3 nights, wish we could have stayed longer, so much more to see.Guest review byIan

The apartment looks better than the pictures in Booking, on a very quiet street, far from the tourist area. Everything was very comfortable-with all that one can need-for us it was 5 star experience. We are very grateful to our hosts and would like to return in Pompei. Just perfect location- nearby center, archeological park and train station.
