From the photos, this place seems gorgeous in the spring/summer. I went during the fall (October), and it was raining the whole time I was there -- made for a cold, uncomfortable stroll outdoors. A lot of the museums and cafes were closed during this time of the year too. You can visit Suomenlinna all year round, but I recommend only visiting when the weather/season is right.
There are nice pic-nic areas close to the ferry jetty but to get the best out of this place you need to be happy walking as steep hills and battlements / tunnels to explore. A struggle with a wheelchair although they have done their best to make the place wheelchair friendly. Cobbled streets mean sensible footwear is a must.
Buy a Helsinki Card to get free entry and take the public ferry which is also free on the card. Take the free tour from visitors centre. If you have out of the ordinary food requirements take a picnic or buy prepackaged salads from the little supermarket to the right of ferry arrival gate, about 3 minutes walk.
If you want to go here and already have a travel card for Helsinki travel then the boat is free. Go in the morning for less visitors and have a walk around before the museums even open. It’s a lovely walk around. We went at 8am and wandered until the first museums openned.
Make sure to get your ticket before boarding the ferry and wrap up warm if going in the winter as the wind off the sea ice makes it quite cold! Take a picnic for the summer and sit on the grass by the sea!
This is an outdoor walking island. There are many places to see and explore. The history is interesting. There is a little supermarket near the ferry terminal and cafes, restaurants, and bathrooms scattered around the island.
Buy a tram day pass (8 euros) and take no. 2 and 3 trams around the city. Sightseeing guides available at tourist info office. Day trips to Suomenlinna and Tallinn also great (buy your own tickets rather than an organised tour) but go early to avoid the crowds.
Combination of old and modern buildings in center of Helsinki, Senate square, Uspenskii cathedral, Suomenlinna (island)
