If you plan on being there when it opens, so does everyone else. Security gets backed up and you spend time standing in hot sun on pavement, which takes a toll on your feet, when a lot of walking is already required.
after the 4th july parade , the smithsonian was the only place of sanctuary offering air conditioned room, seats, food and while waiti g for the fireworks one can stay till closi g and this particular day was so hot and humid . thanks smithsonian!!
Not much has changed since I last visited in 1987. The space and science museum needs an upgrade. Showing the same aircrafts that I saw in 1987 during my last visit. No arrangements for hot food in the museum cafeteria. The museums in Washington should learn from their counterparts in the UK on how food is served. Do note it gives extra income to the place and attracts / solves food requirements of a visitor who may not be familiar with the city. Cold sandwiches are not ideal all the time. Also the vegetarian options should be more.
Don't go during school vacation week. The lines should were too long in some places. There were bus loads of kids when we went but they were well behaved. We enjoyed the Museum of American History and National Art Gallery. We had lunch at the cafeteria downstairs which was good. Also, at the expresso bar they have gelato that was really really tasty.
Skip the American Indian Museum, the exhibits were not very interesting. The Museum of African American History is extremely well done, but overwhelming. At over a mile long, the underground exhibit is enormous and had no way to stop in the middle so go early and slowly.
