A Breath of Fresh Air
Italy’s longest lake, Lake Maggiore lies at the foot of the southern Alps and extends into Switzerland in the north. Most of the Lake Maggiore hotels in Switzerland are in Locarno and neighbouring Ascona. Surrounded by vineyards, Locarno houses a 12th-century castle and an innovative representation of the solar system which extends as far as Tegna village.
Also in Swiss territory is Brissago, starting point for boat trips to the Brissago Islands whose botanical gardens grow coffee plants. Over the Italian border is beautiful Cannobio in Piedmont, where brightly coloured buildings overlook the small harbour.
South is Ghiffa, home to a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pilgrimage mountain. Just beyond is Verbania, a laidback city lining 2 of Maggiore Lake’s shores. Across the water, the largest of the Borromean Islands – Isola Bella – has a palace and stepped gardens offering wonderful lake views. Home to the largest concentration of Lake Maggiore hotels, Stresa is a lovely town and departure point for boat trips to these islands.
Near the lake’s southern tip is Arona, while less well-known Lake Maggiore resorts in Lombardy include Angera (known for wines and a medieval castle), sleepy Ranco, and Luino with its popular weekly market.

The room had a stunning view of the lake and was spacious and well-furnished. It also had a balcony overlooking the lake and beautiful manicured grounds. The bathroom was luxurious, with fluffy towels, a Frette robe, and lovely soap and lotion. The balcony had a small table and chairs for guests to enjoy the view. The breakfast was a traditional Italian meal, served formally, and any special requests were accommodated. The restaurant for dinner was exceptional and intimate, with a gourmet dining experience, a lovely wine list a knowledgeable Sommelier, and expertly served. This family-run hotel is well-managed, with friendly and accommodating staff, and the Family is charming. The location is outstanding. It was the perfect way to end our vacation.

Wunderschöne hoteleigene Parkanlage direkt am Wasser mit vielen Liegen und Strandkörben. Viel Privatsphäre, da die Liegen verteilt sind. Brasserie mit leckeren Snacks (Tatar, Bruschetta, Pommes...), auch direkt zu den Liegen serviert. Restaurant mit toller Sicht, teilweise Plätze direkt am Wasser. Tip: direkt danach fragen und reservieren. Frühstück mit riesigem Angebot und vielen frischen Zutaten. Personal hilfsbereit und man spürt deren Begeisterung für die Arbeit in der Villa Porta. Alles in allem eine Perle für die ultimative Erholung.

So clean and quiet and tranquil. The pool is amazing for kids, it has a soft bottom and lots of shallow area to play in. The food at the restaurants is good. The store and laundry are convenient and our kids loved the play ground. You can walk into the town of Feriolo. It's a very pretty area.

Aries hotel very well provided everything we expected, with good organisation, good breakfast, easy car parking at the entrance and helpful staff. Great value and convenience. The bathroom having a window is a very comfortable feature.

We like visiting gardens and so the islands and locations...
We like visiting gardens and so the islands and locations around Stresa were ideal for us. the ferry gives you convenient access to a range of locations. We also spent a day in Milan. Its easy to get there on the train and we felt we had a better experience just visiting Milan rather than staying there. There is a round trip by train and ferry that takes you to the top of the lake and then back right down the lake. Unfortunately this was fully booked - it sounds great so book up early.

Palanzza was fabulous. Beautiful small quiet location. A great variety of restaurants. The views across to Stresa and Baveno were fabulous even more so at night. The choice of destinations reached by ferry boat is another bonus. Also enjoyed the lovely water display with music every night.

Baveno is very small but that is why I chose it. We wanted somewhere not too busy as we needed to relax after a busy couple of days on the Amalfi coast. I would definitely go back. It is easy to get the bus or the boat into Stresa or to the islands or other locations along the lake. We had a car one of the days and went to lake Orta too. We loved Lake Maggiore and again I chose it as I was worried lake Como was going to be very, very busy. We went in early October and had perfect weather ca 24-25 C.

Easy drive to Stresa and island trips.
Travelling from Australia and flying into Milan, I find that Arona is a great place to stop and relax, before heading to other European destinations.

nice little town at the lago maggiore with a great view. the market was nice, great choice with friendly staff. What we did not like - and that is not the first time - is the quality of the food. Poor cooking, strange menue with lasagne, chips and a scalopina alla milanese?!?!? My carbonara was so salty, I could not eat it. the Italian cuisine goes junk food. Why not a simple but well done Italian food? That's what I would like to get. If I want fast and junk food, I get it at home if I wanted.

A small place by the lake, but the shore is more or less private, so you are limited to the part of the shore that is in the camp, The place has many shops, which are more or less empty or already run down, also there is only one restaurant , which is open all day, but there is a lot of traffic. Also, there is a lot of garbage on the street. In general, you get the feeling that they had big plans for tourism, but they did not succeed.

Stresa is a lovely town of the right size to have all the facilities one would want (rail, ferries, lake front, shopping and eating) yet still be small enough to have some feeling of intimacy that very large towns often lack.
The one negative was the railway station which was rather tatty and not in keeping with the image of the town. It was also badly served by public transport and we were lucky to be able to grab the one hire car (not a formal taxi it seems) that turned up in time for the train from Geneva. It was not cheap. The station is not right by the lakeside and main hotels and while not a long walk would have been a trial for ageing visitors with suitcases (as we were).
