Easy drive and was pleased that it was not snowing hard as we only have snow tires. You will need chains if the snow is very heavy. Location was breath taking and the beauty of the Onsen was amazing, perched along the river. Check in was smooth and there was a English speaking staff to check us in. Dinner and breakfast was amazing and was please that they asked for food restrictions when making a booking as my daughter does not eat seafood and they provide her options. It was a Ryokan style accommodations. Would have preferred an extra pillow. I guess we could have asked for one. But over all experience just amazing. It is a beautiful Onsen surrounded by nature. The hotel location is about 10 mins from Tokyo, by Taxi, 1200/1500 Yen. There is not a lot to see of interest near hotel, so would need to "get out of town." This will create a problem if travelling by train, as ALL information at the station is in JAPANESE and no staffing to give assisstance. Eateries have a similar problem, as for many, both staff and menus english is not understood. If you enjoy transportation adventures, Hakone is the place for you! In one day with the Free Pass you can take the mountain train from Hakone-Yumoto up to the funicular (which they call a cable car) and then there are two cable cars (they call them ropeways) that you take up to smokin' (literally) Mt. Hakone and then down to the lake and from there you can take a ship across and if you like roller coaster rides, take the K bus back to Hakone--11 switch backs at breakneck speed! There are also onsen nearby and lots of tourist shops with a variety of local specialties. Really fun and highly recommended! Oh, and if you like art, definitely pit stop at the Open Air museum. Chiba is an amazing city and because Star Wars Celebration 2025 was held there this year, I had to come and visit. The city is only about an hour away from Tokyo and going there from Chiba was easy to do. We were attending a event in Kawasaki so that is why we stayed there. We didn't really do much sight-seeing in Kawasaki. We liked that the city was only a short train ride to many other cities like downtown Toyko and Yokohama. Touristy, somewhat charmless town that is nevertheless worth it for the magnificent shrines (Shinto, and the resting places of the first and third shoguns) and temples (Buddhist) and the museum (splurge on the museum! Seriously). Many people go to see these buildings + the red bridge (which is merely fine - short and not really noteworthy), but don't venture to the outskirts of Nikko to take in the other sites (Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Botanical Garden, Tamozawa Imperial Villa and much more impressive Nikko Dainichi Bridge).Guest review byChristopherUnited States - 10.0
