Taupo is a family friendly destination with many activities available around the lake. However it can be very busy during popular season such as the Christmas break, so making a plan to visit in advance would be my recommendation. Turangi is a beautiful, scenic location and the people are very welcoming and friendly. We were impressed by the service and choices at the Hydro Cafe, the Flytackle shop and the NZ Post shop. We also enjoyed the Pihanga Gallery showcasing local art and crafts and a delicious Italian meal at Valentinos. Unfortunately the unit we stayed in was infested with ants which were in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. We awoke to find them in our beds and crawling all over us. Most unpleasant experience. I advised the manager but he didn't really apologise and I believe he was aware of the situation. His response was that he would need to get a pest controller in. My baby and I stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed everything about Waiouru. We were at the Oasis motel which is across the road from the Z gas station and next to a Diner,bakery, bar & bottle store which breaks off from the motel but still far away from the rooms.
