Howfield Manor Hotel, hotel in Canterbury

This charming hotel is 2 miles from Canterbury and close to Dover and the Eurostar. Dating back to the 12th century, it is surrounded by picturesque hills and fruit trees.

I loved the location and the atmosphere of Howfield Manor. Even late at night it was appealing. Fantastic grounds which were lovely for walking around and relaxing even though all the summer flowers were finished blooming for the season.

Number 8, hotel in Canterbury

Located within 500 metres of Canterbury Cathedral and 1.1 km of Canterbury WestTrain Station, Number 8 features rooms in Canterbury.

The suite I had booked was small and cosy and absolutely tidy, with a comfortable bed and no noises to be heard in the bedroom at night. In the bathroom, there was a rainfall shower and a sufficient number of towles of all sizes, as well as different kinds of products, like soap and shampoo. Check-in was easy and Laura was very helpful, when there was a problem. Number 8 is close to the High Street, so you have all kinds of shops, restaurants, tea rooms and coffee places nearby. And it is only a five minutes walk to Canterbury Cathedral.

FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

    Canterbury is a delightful city.

Canterbury is a delightful city. A good mix of history and some modern within the city walls. Plenty of choice for cafes / pubs/ restaurants to suit all tastes/balances. The Cathedral is of course sublime but also good to explore the town and city walls etc. We all took the train to Margate for a day as well. Favourite Cafe : King & Guild Fav pub Thomas Beckett, Bell & Crown,White Hart. Foundry Brew Pub for cask and food is very good. Restaurants : Socialite, El Sol and Olive Grove.

The Cathedral is magnificent and the docent-led tour perfect for even slow walkers. The volunteers scattered about the precinct helpful on my return trips ( I made 4 in one day) to the cathedral. The town has wonderful choices for food. I highly recommend The Parrot. The plaza outside of the cathedral is filled at night with vibrant crowd. Enjoyed the buskers who sang everything from sea chanties to Liverpool anthems. Two other sights not to miss are the ruins of the Augustine Abbey and St Martin's, the oldest Christian English Church in continuous use.

Great city. Very historic, Roman influences.

Great city. Very historic, Roman influences. Worth doing a walking tour or bus trip. Very clean. Some great restaurants. The cathedral dominates, very imposing and worth a look from the outside. Some great pubs too, we went to the Old Weavers overlooking the river. The crooked house book shop is also worth a look, and try their 'blind date' book! The Beany building (free to enter) is worth a look, and the Roman Museum.

A lovely town with a medieval/renaissance vibe and a famous cathedral. We walked the whole central area in 2 hours and then just leisurely strolled the small streets and popped into shops. Westgate Gardens and Abbots Mill Garden are absolutely charming. Had a bite to eat at a wonderful French bakery, Cafe St Pierre. For a more substantial and inexpensive lunch, Plan Burrito Canterbury. Part of the cathedral façade is under restoration, if you are going for that, it is best to find out when it will be finished. Overall, the town can be seen in 1 day. We stayed here for 2 days but spent one day in Dover, there is a bus from Canterbury that takes only half an hour.

    Lovely town centre.

Lovely town centre. The Cathedral was beautiful and is a must-see. Also, I'd recommend booking a guide that will give more insight into the historical background of the cathedral. Take a 45 minute boat cruise https://www.canterburyrivertours.co.uk/ on River Strout. our guide Alex was very good and gave a lot of information on Canterbury. Had a good meal at the local Wetherspoon. There're two zoos in Canterbury: Wingham zoo and Howletts Wild animal park. We went to the latter mentioned. The wild animals have a huge area to roam around that bares the chance of not necessarily seeing them close up but saw lots of monkeys and gorillas. Elephants were quite a sight as they were just let out to the front area. The rhinos also came up to us and also managed to catch the anteaters walking about looking for food. I'd suggest you walk around and if you cannot see an animal, go back a bit later and you might just catch them like we did with the anteaters. Also visited some seaside towns around Canterbury and I'd recommend them if you fancy a walk along the beach in Whitstable, Herne Bay and Deal. Dover castle and the White Cliffs of Dover also worth a visit.

The people were very nice and friendly .

The people were very nice and friendly . There were lots of closed down shop fronts which looked tacky . There was a huge charge to go inside the cathedral ( crazy ) huge charge to go on boat and go to Roman museum . We choose one activity. There were lots of good places to eat and drink and stunning historical places . Car parks were not easy to find , run down looking and wifi was a huge problem .

The cottage was very clean and tidy and had free parking. We arrive at 10:00 on the Friday night, after a 5 hour journey, to be greeted by the lovely Brian, who made us feel very welcome. The property is situated close to the centre of Canterbury so we could walk into town easily (10 mins). The property had everything we needed for our short stay. The garden at the back the hotel has a lovely seating area. We would definitely stay again.

The hotel was only a 7 minute walk to Canterbury town centre but was on a quiet calm little street. The room size was great and it was lovely and warm with a spare blanket. There was a kettle and a coffee pot to make teas and coffees as well as a little fridge if we had anything we wanted to keep in there. The bed was super comfy and shower was lovely. Self check in and out was particularly handy and very secure and safe.

We had booked to stay in this hotel to attend our son's graduation at Canterbury Cathedral, which is a short walk from the hotel. It is a historic house with spacious comfortable rooms. Very helpful staff. The breakfast was a buffet with a good range of cold food. I wondered about this when booking but it was actually very good and to be honest better than the usual 'full English'.
