Fantastic place to visit!
Fantastic place to visit! So many amazing temples and historic buildings! Also, a much more vibrant and friendly vibe than Tokyo- I love the energy in Kyoto, especially talking to the locals.
There's a lot of hidden gems here outside of the "tourist" zone, but even though the touristy areas are very busy, they're still well worth visiting.
Please be respectful of the no-photography rules around certain streets and temples though because it's stressful for the locals when people don't.
I will definitely return to Kyoto!
Also, there's a hostel called "Guest House Ga-Jyun": great place to stay, but just take a walk along the street between the hostel and the train station... you'll find a vintage kimono dealer who sells kimonos for as little as ¥1000!!
There's also a cute little market alley with hundreds of lanterns all the way down it... the restaurant on the corner is run by the nicest dude! Great food- definitely worth a visit!

Use public transportation so you can get to know the city.
Use public transportation so you can get to know the city. Go see temples early, we went whenever we could and it wasn’t that bad, but they do close early so you won’t get to enjoy if you get there late. Everything closes early, plan to be in early. Sight see the outskirts, Kyoto city is like any other city. They do not have trash cans, so be prepared to consume on the spot or carry your trash until you find a trash can. They have money exchange machines all over, I found that an actual business location gives you a better rate. 4 nights is enough to see the major places in the city. Google maps will tell you everything you need to know about routes. If you are paying your US phone in installments check if your company, like AT&T didn’t locked your phone, if so you cannot use and eSIM, I found that out too late. Use google maps also for restaurants, ideally reviews are on point.

Most of the shrines, temples and other touristic spots are...
Most of the shrines, temples and other touristic spots are withing an hour travel by bus and several of them are just within 30 minutes walking from the Kyoto station. It can be a bit confusing at first due to the lack of "proper" sidewalks on some not so main streets, but if you follow the locals, it is a no brainer. On the main touristic attractions, in spite of the huge crowds on the entrances during peak hours, everyone follows the line and the flow of people is smooth and fast, never had to wait more than a few minutes to buy a ticket or enter someplace. Be careful as many touristic buses tend to arrive in huge numbers, and schools tend to organize trips on mondays, so you might coincide with local students.
This hotel was booked last minute as last resort when we could not extend our stay in ryokan as it was fully booked. But wow! We got a surprise and it was all worth it. We wanted to stay longer in Kyoto and this hotel not only provided us last minute accommodation but also was one of the highlights of Kyoto. The staff, the ambiance and the location were just the best. Could mot have asked for a better place. They even gave us a gift for our stay !!! How cool!!
It was the best hotel we stayed in during our trip in Japan. Its aesthetic was amazing, combining traditional and modern interior design.
The room was super clean and comfortable. The stuff was polite and helpful.
The location was very convenient for sightseeing at Gion and Northern Higashiyama. Even if it’s not central, it offers a free shuttle bus hourly to Kyoto station that we used everyday.
We’d definitely choose this hotel again in the future.
Best budget hotel I've stayed in. Huge room with sofa, confortable bed, super clean. The hotel looks like an art gallery, the staff is super friendly and the buffet breakfast is delicious and healthy with homemade smothies, and granola, roasted veggies but also great eggs and meat. Great attention to details, with complimentary bath salts, umbrelas to borrow and use of bikes. Metro stations near. Super quiet also. Would definitely stay there again.
This was probably our best stay from our 3 week trip to Japan. If you want to stay in the center of Kyoto, close to major touristic spots, but also far from the noise and busy crowds, please book this hotel.
You have plenty of space, the room is clean and comfy. We honestly could not have asked for more.
Is relatively close to subway, and bus station. The staff was helpful, assisting us when we send our luggages using Yamato service.
It was the best hotel during my trip to Japan. At first I was nervous because I am a woman traveling alone. However, the neighborhood of this hotel was safe and I felt safe. I went to Kyoto ONLY for this hotel. I highly recommend this hotel if you want to experience life in a traditional Japanese home. At the end of my stay, host made me tea and took me to the main station in Kyoto.
The bathroom was exceptional very beautifully designed. The room was clean and quite. The bathroom products were excellent as was the tea. Also the breakfast is a must include. It is one of the best buffets I have ever had. Both traditional American, European and Japanese breakfast was offered. It is about a 10 walk from the train station and a straight walk to hotel with no turns.
very new ryokan, many local guest. premium and luxury, the room is good but the pillow is not so comfy you need to be there early to be anle to choose pillow at the pillow station. Onsen was the best part private onsen are very good, even the public onsen is big enough so it is not crowded even many people use at the same time. there are free ramen at night which is superb
The staff of Dhawa Yura were all extremely helpful and friendly--likely the best we have experienced in our many many years of travel both domestic and international. Rooms were spotlessly clean. Beds were very comfortable. The location near the center of town, across from a river, near Gion, and next to a subway was perfect. The hotel restaurant was excellent.
The best parts of this hotel - the view and the shower. Seriously, the location couldn't be better right in the Gion district. I'm glad I paid the extra lil better to have a superior room with a view. And the shower was huge; I'm going to miss it! Apart from that, the room was lovely and big.
Best thing about this hotel is the central location to everywhere on Shijo, right between Karasuma and Kawaramachi Stations, which gets you everywhere basically. There are several Family Marts close by and 7-11 right opposite the hotel. Lots of food and shopping options too on this street.
- convenient to have laundry machine/ dryer in the room.
- best location for shopping, going out, and sight seeing.
- walking distance to taking city buses.
- subway station is close to the hotel.
- reasonable room size for us (two people)
- having a safety box on the room.
Great value for money. One of the best 4-star hotels we've ever stayed. Excellent services, very clean, polite staff, nice facilities. Good location next to the train station. In total a very comfortable experience in the beautiful city of Kyoto.
One the best hotels I have ever stayed in. A beautiful, comfortable, spaceous, pleasant room. Excellent beds. Great location, very quiet but close to bus stations and many great restaurants. The staff was superb. I greatly recommend!
We have stayed in few hotels in Japan but this was by far the best one!
5 star service with very comfortable room and breakfast delivered to your door. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Great location and big comfortable room.
This is the best hotel I have ever been to. Everything was super clean, new and it really felt like home. It’s also close to Gion and the maiko and geiko streets. I can’t recommend this hotel enough.
The best deal for a hotel
The Hyatt and Hilton could take some notes on these guys
Smart Japanese lodging with everything you need and amazing nice staff
The best place in Kyoto. It takes care of you not needing to travel from the station to another hotel. It is super clean, affordable and well maintained.
Good location, 2 minutes to Kyoto station. The breakfast was the best from all our stays in Japan. Complements to the hotel staff working in the kitchen!
