Chania Old Town was absolutely brilliant-the town is beautiful, full of charm, and the food is fantastic. It’s also a great base for exploring other places. That said, I personally find a few days in a city are enough for me, as I prefer quieter spots right by the sea. Walking in the early morning and the evening, siesta and reading in the hot part of the day suits me very much. The Greeks here and all the places in Crete I have been are quietly kind, actively when interacted with, and unobtrusive. Not since the Met in NY or the Shanghai museum of antiquity have I seen such wonders as the Museums at Chalepa, and Heraklion. And all v pleasant walks to get to. This is a very civilized place. Chania in July is certain to be crowded, but it has an energy and colour that is special. Walk around the smaller and quieter corners of the old town ( Splantzia ) for a more relaxed view of the town The harbour front hotels and restaurants are an attraction for visitors, as are the many boat excursions available. The old town area is spectacular.
The old town area is spectacular. The choice of restaurants is endless. There is no real entertainment for families . The beaches are somewhat limited. We visited Nea Chora beach most days. Go to the left for inexpensive sun lounges at 10 euros for two beds and a shade. Nearer the town they charge 30 to 50 euros !! It also has an excellent cafe/snack bar. The beach is narrow and there are a lot of rocks in the sea. Take the 20 min bus ride (4 eurso return) to the Sunset beach..no rocks and shallow calm water beach lounges and umbrella 20 euros. The hotel’s location is ideal for exploring the Old Town of Chania. The view of the harbour and beyond is exceptional. A 5/10 minute walk takes you to a rocky area for swimming/snorkelling. It is actually the staff in the hotel and in the adjacent restaurant, Zepos, who make this place special. Nothing is too much trouble.
