After a few hours on the road, I arrived at the hotel wondering… “Wait, is there no reception here?” A couple of loops around later, I spotted the parking area right at the back — where the reception was hiding all along. Check-in was quick and easy (in fact, so quick I almost had time to re-park the car in the lot next door — just kidding!). The room was huge, spotless, and comfortable. There was a mysterious noise that I never managed to figure out — maybe it depends on the room, maybe it’s part of the charm. When hunger struck, I discovered there’s a restaurant right in the building serving delicious Korean burgers and some of the best milkshakes I’ve ever had. Back to the room, I half-heartedly tried solving the mystery noise again… but the comfy bed and fresh linens won. Overall, a great balance between quality and price — and a stay full of little surprises.

FAQs about hotels in Christchurch

Stunning Natural Beauty at Your Doorstep

Dusting itself off from a series of recent earthquakes is the seriously stunning New Zealand city of Christchurch. While its old English buildings like ChristChurch Cathedral are being rebuilt, the magnificent Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park sustain its reputation as the Garden City.

Located along the Avon River, NZ’s 2nd-largest city has Victoria Square at its centre. Surrounding highlights include the Canterbury Museum and the Gothic-style Arts Centre. Sumner Beach is a favourite location for locals when the sun shines.

Out towards the spectacular harbour town of Lyttelton is the Christchurch Gondola ride where you can enjoy a sweeping view of the city.

The South Island’s capital is a good starting-off point for extreme sports such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting. The majestic Southern Alps surround the city and offer world-class ski resorts such as Methven, at the foot of Mt. Hutt.

A large selection of motels and hotels are available on Booking.com, including in the vicinity around Christchurch International Airport.

A city being redesigned and rebuilt.

A city being redesigned and rebuilt. Somewhat ‘empty’ but not deserted. A fresh and positive feel. The adorable Avon River runs through town…… worth exploring all the way to the coast on cycles. Heaps of parks, many with features suitable for kids. Earthquake Museum was fascinating……. my 14 & 12 year old boys were mesmerised. No earthquakes back in Sydney. Good food all over the city. We caught public buses(route 29) from airport and return. Recommended!! Great city!

It was in winter and the traffic was pretty light - no problem getting around. Museums and art galleries as you would expect in a city - Pretty good. Great views of the city from the top floor of the library. Plenty of good eating out options.

Christchurch felt like a busy city, especially around the hotel area where traffic was quite heavy. Unlike some tourist hotspots, it didn’t feel overly touristy, which was a plus. The shopping malls were similar to what you’d find in any other city—nothing particularly unique, and there were very few souvenir shops or local specialty stores. One downside was the lack of cafés and food options along the main streets, making it harder to find a casual spot to eat while exploring. Also, many buildings appeared neglected, with graffiti and signs of disrepair, which gave parts of the city a rather run-down and unattractive look. Overall, Christchurch has its moments, but some areas could definitely benefit from a bit more care and vibrancy.

Being Peak winter there were not a lot of tourists around. We found lots of lovely places to eat, cafes, pubs, restaurants. We had a wet rainy afternoon in a lovely winery restaurant - great meal and great selection of wines. We did a few day trips around the area and walked through the Botanical Gardens in town. We visited Littleton port/marina and the Gondala. The surrounding scenery is very good and we really enjoyed our time in Christchurch. We'll be back.

Christchurch has its dramas over the last 14 years, but it has picked itself up and got on making itself beautiful again. The people and the Planners have done a great job in creating the new Christchurch and I think give it another 10 years it will be the place to go and be in New Zealand, if it's not now! food, Riverside markets and the restaurants in that area were fantastic. Shopping, every need covered. The Trams, Buses and just the chance to walk most places was excellent. The food and Pub scene in Christchurch is also awesome, with the use of reclaimed churches and some of the older and new buildings. I was born in Chch but I have lived in Perth for 40 years and this was my first trip back in 24 years and I was very surprised with how good my hometown is doing!!

Being a relatively large city it's actually super easy to navigate, you've got specific locations for specific tasks and everything you wanted seems to be there. Seems it only take 15 min to get to beach- gondolas- city- airport. (Driving) so many food places to choose from and something for everyone. Kids loved the Margaret mahy play ground, the library is insanely good to visit with kids, they were enamoured with the old college and loved the interactiveness of exhibit., New Brighton pier was pretty at night time and quiet. Sumner beach was fun to visit via the lyttleton tunnel and seaside roady. Jurassic mini golf was a spot along the way and stop which was fun.

Perfect blend of antique furnishings and modern comforts. Fantastic friendly service, it felt more like a "home" than a hotel. Lovely breakfast every morning. Great location, within walking distance to the CBD, museums, galleries, eateries and the tram runs right outside. Highly recommend, will definitely book again next time we are in Christchurch. 10/10.

Check-in process was great and the hotel is situated in a very central location right in the heart of Christchurch's CBD. It has plenty of facilities as well, although I wished the check-in staff briefly took me through what facilities there were. It was only until I left that I found out from a fellow traveller, that there was a gym here.
