Barcelona is one of our favourite cities. Although it is quite pricey, the vibe is amazing. The food scene is amazing, with Iberian hams on freshly-baked, crusty rolls a firm "Must Have"! We also felt quite safe walking around, as there was a quite visible police presence. Barcelona is a wonderful city especially if you go a bit outside the "beaten path" and try to experience it from a local's viewpoint. There are of course myriads of touristy things to do, but the city has so much more to offer. Transportation is amazing, may it be metro or buses or even cycling around and it's definitely not as hot as Madrid ( middle of summer ) Get a monthly card for €20 and not a Hola Barcelona card - it's all you'll need to move around.
