We travelled as a group of 9 colleagues as part of a fund raising challenge. We visited 5 cathedral cities over 2 days running between 5k and 10k at each. Our overnight stay was in Canterbury and the hotel was perfect in terms of location for restaurants, bars and the cathedral. Parking the minibus was easy in a nearby car park. Staff answered all questions ahead of visit and were attentive throughout. Rooms were exceptional for the price paid.

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.
River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.
From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.
In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Lovely place with lots of unique shops also the main shops and banks you would expect in a big city. Used Canterbury East station and South East Kent trains to travel to Dover Castle . Luke at the hotel told us how to get there only a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
Plenty of places to eat or buy food from.

A busy bustling place.
A busy bustling place. The older part of the city is full of narrower streets with independent shops, and is by far the nicer area to stroll around.
The cathedral is very interesting, but the charge of £17 to enter is a rip off.

Canterbury is an historic city, as such is easy to get around ancient streets, very intimate centre. For me the Lovely Cathedral is the jewel in the crown, and from the Hampton by Hilton Hotel is a few minutes walk, I could see the Spires from room windows.. This hotel has a rooftop restaurant and the views from there are spectacular, I went for a look.
As I travel alone I usually eat at M&S Cafes or similar, and if I need anything else take back sandwiches to hotel. I can recommend Canterbury for a visit, I got train from London St, Pancras to Canterbury West Station, hotel 10 mins walk or Taxi £7,00.

The city abounds with areas to discover...take the time, walk, it will be rewarding. We used local bus services to visit the local region...Deal, Sandwich, Dover and Folkstone...fabulous!
We discovered that Good Friday was the best day to see the Cathedral because litugically it is an empty space that day...but it was being prepared for BBC broadcasts and hence was fully open. The surrounds are worth some time also.

The Cathedral is awesome.
The Cathedral is awesome. Plenty of places to eat and drink....the Cafe du Soleil stood out the food was very good and the staff where friendly & professional. We loved walking around Canterbury, lots of green spaces, side roads that led you on, our stay was too short so we didn't find anywhere that we would avoid.....we'll just have to go back!
The location was so good. it was beautiful and room was clean with comfy beds. a bus stop to Canterbury is right in front of the facility.
the staff were the kindest. all of them were very friendly and helpful in every way they could.
they called for a taxi for us helped with our baggages and even packed delicious breakfast for us since we didn’t have enough time to have it at the hotel.
one of the best stays i’ve evert had and definitely recommend. 11/10
The hotel is very comfortable, only 15 rooms. The staff were very friendly and made the stay memorable. Situated just outside Canterbury, easy access to city. There is a Park’n’ride, just a few minutes away, excellent way to city centre. The food was excellent, cooked to perfection. I would definitely stay here again. We only booked a small room as we were there only one night. For a longer stay worth having a bigger room. Thank you
Location, just outside the City Gate -- easy walk into centre and the cathedral. The Dickens Room was clean, light, airy and spacious, with view of city wall tower. Not noisy, in spite of facing on a busy street. Staff was helpful with parking next door and a city map. Breakfast was attractive and generous, but lacking in protein. Everything was sweet. A boiled egg, or some cheese would benefit people with blood sugar concerns.
The hotel is in a great location with plenty of parking available. The city centre is within 20 minutes by foot, so it's brilliant to be able to leave the car and enjoy strolling through the old city. Breakfast was great and the staff were very friendly. The room was clean, cozy and spacious with a bathtub included. Good WiFi connection. This hotel will be our first thought whenever we visit Canterbury again.
The breakfast menu is expansive with options ranging from continental to a traditional English breakfast. The staff was extremely friendly and always willing to help. The location of the hotel is not too far from Canterbury City, and you can walk through picturesque neighborhoods and a beautiful park to reach the high street.
Lovely old building with an interesting history and perfect location. Welcoming staff, room fairly basic but warm, clean and comfortable. Nice garden area. Honesty bar a nice touch. Breakfast went down very well. Last time in Canterbury we stayed at a more expensive hotel nearby but overall preferred staying here.
We absolutely loved the Castle House Hotel! The location is great, right in the heart of Canterbury, with a private parking space! The room was cosy and clean and the beds very comfortable. The breakfast was well served and very tasty. The staff was great, very kind :) We will definitely come back again :)
The hotel is located in a very central area close to all amenities, the Cathedral and boat ride opportunities. It was very clean and stylish. It offers parking opportunities (offered with extra payment though). Nice restaurant for breakfast and interesting bar. Very welcoming and accommodating staff.
The staff were very available and friendly. The breakfast was great. There was enough parking and the hotel was a short walk into the city centre. The pool was great! Our room was spacious and comfortable. The shower pressure was weak but it was nice to also have the option of a bath.
Perfect hosts with invaluable knowledge of the area. The standard of breakfast exceeded some of the very expensive hotels that we have stayed in. Location for us was perfect with a very pleasant easy 15 minute walk to the city centre, a good stretch of it alongside a river.
I love Cathedral Gate Hotel and is my favourite in Canterbury. If you are coming to visit the Cathedral, this is the best and most traditional Hotel. Breakfast is absolutely delicious and the staff takes great care of you. I highly recommend Cathedral Gate Hotel.
A well presented hotel where many of the original features have been retained.
Friendly and helpful staff.
On site parking in mature gardens.
A tasty breakfast that was cooked for me individually.
A10/15 minute walk into Canterbury city centre
It was pet friendly hotel we could find in Canterbury close to the city center and all the attractions. The hotel has open grass area where we can take our pet out. They have 24 hr reception, and were very kind. The room was clean and cozy.
The staff were extremely helpful in helping us try to resolve issues with our rental car, going above and beyond in assistance. The hotel is conveniently located in the center of Canterbury. The breakfast was delicious
it’s in the city centre and has parking ( charged ) so is ideal for those wishing to explore Canterbury on foot. it is an individual hotel with a nice size rooms , not a chain ( or at least I don’t think it’s a chain ).
Perfect location. Excellent hotel, staff, service, facilities, room and breakfast. Would definitely stay again on a visit to Canterbury with only approx 15min walk to city centre. Throughly recommend.
It was a lovely cottage with beautiful architecture. Very comfortable 2 bedroom with kitchen, wifi, television and all amenities. Close to everything. Hotel staff were very friendly and courteous.
The shower was the best hotel shower I've experienced. The breakfast waiting staff were always friendly and helpful. The city centre position was convenient for exploring Canterbury.
