Winchester is a delightful little city! This was our first trip and we loved everything about it.. it was busy but not overcrowded, there was a great choice of restaurants, pubs and cafes, and small independent shops as well as the bigger, more well-known stores. We were entertained by a number of different buskers, all playing different instruments (one was a lady playing an Irish harp), and different musical genres. This made for an enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere while we wandered the streets and lanes. I wish we lived much nearer Winchester so we could return more often, but we have already booked another stay in December for the well-known Christmas market, when we plan to visit the cathedral as well - we couldn't fit it in this time!

Winchester is an amazing cathedral town that I visited after a recommendation from a friend. Staying two nights and having three days to explore was a perfect amount of time to experience what the town had to offer and see its charm. I spent the first afternoon walking around the high street and enjoying the Anglo/Saxon and Medieval style architecture and buildings. I had lunch and dinner at the Royal Oak pub (delicious Sunday roast) on the first day. I would recommend buying the pass for the Winchester City Museum, The West Gate Museum and the Great Hall (I was not aware of the pass until I got to the West Gate). A visit to the Cathedral is a must and I would recommend purchasing a ticket for the guided tower tour (small space alert though), incredible views of the town from the roof of the cathedral. St Giles Hill view point is 20 minute walk from the centre and provides a different vantage point for the town. Walking through the Abbey Gardens and the ruins of Wolvesey Castle were free and lovely on a sunny afternoon. The Winchester Bakery had delicious brownies and coffee when you needed a break from sightseeing. The military museums were also informative, I visited the Royal Green Jackets Rifle Museum on my final morning.
Highly recommend visiting this lovely town :)

We have grown to love Hampshire so much as the people there...
We have grown to love Hampshire so much as the people there seem the most lovely wherever we go. We went to the Jane Austin House and I said this to a lovely man who was one of the curators and he said 'that is Hampshire people and that is why we moved here'. Winchester itself is beautiful not just the Cathedral or Great Hall or the Mill but spending an hour or so sitting outside one of the many establishments watching the world (and their dogs - we've never been anywhere where there were so many dogs and we argued which we should get). We both work hard but upon arrival we just completely relaxed. Other recommendations the Bangkok Bistrot restaurant in Jewry Street (we also saw the Grayson Perry Exhibit in the same Road), the Sunday morning antiques and retro and other market - I bought two wonderful things I will cherish, but above all the happiness everyone exuded, we will be back. This trip was short but there is so much to see (and also so many of my favourite shops, more than actually accessible in where I live in Kensington but in Winchester all in the high street - the White Company, Hobbs x 20!)
As you can tell we fell in love with Winchester!!
Beautiful hotel in a perfect location for visiting Winchester. Our room was fantastic with a very comfortable bed, large bathroom and view into the courtyard. We chose the half board dinner and breakfast option. The dinner included two courses with many choices some of which required paying extra. As you would expect, there was an interesting wine list. The breakfast buffet also offered your choice of freshly cooked eggs, my husband enjoyed the full English while I loved my eggs Benedict.
the hotel is perfectly positioned to visit Winchester, it is a high standard hotel with extensions for rooms to the original building, restaurant looks superb ( didn't actually use it)and nice handy bar. the reception staff were excellent friendly and welcoming. the rooms are of a decent size and standard though some of the fittings are a little tired, but saying that cannot fault the cleanliness and layout, the million dollar question would we go back - yes.
I wanted a cheap and cheerful room for the night and didn't want to pay Winchester prices. This room was perfect for what I needed.
Quiet location, easy to get too, lots of parking and a good breakfast.
I had a lovely stress free night and was able to enjoy a day in the nearby city without worry.
The pub downstairs was quiet and the room had plenty of drinks and snack available. Can't fault the hotel.
The hotel perfectly matched mine and my partner's expectations. The room was very comfortable and it was so convenient to have access to the swimming pool and spa facilities during our stay. Staff were accommodating and allowed us to leave our bags before we checked in and after we checked out. All in all, a perfect place to stay while visiting Winchester!
Great place to stay - very central but parking available though it may require a walk as it is largely street parking but a big plus in central Winchester.
we booked the 2 bed apartment which is detached from the hotel and is really a 3 storey house - excellent and well appointed, provided you are happy with stairs. Staff very friendly and helpful.
* Location of hotel, with an exceptional view of Winchester Cathedral
* Willingness of staff to help
* Comfortable room (the deluxe double)
* Good-quality breakfast
* Proximity to town centre
*Pre-ordered prosecco was presented as a complementary gesture, as it was delayed by a day (and thus spoiled the surprise on check-in)
The room itself was absolutely lovely, great bathroom, the service was great and breakfast the next morning was tasty but also in a lovely cosy setting. The hotel itself and courtyard was beautiful yet with character, wish we could have enjoyed that with better weather!
This is a perfect location for exploring the historic center of Winchester and its cathedral. Esme was the perfect host. She went above and beyond to help us with a special emergency need. We appreciate her practical help and caring spirit.
Lovely friendly staff , food was excellent so fresh
We got the bus right outside the hotel into Winchester, easy parking at the hotel
Such an easy relaxing experience
Deluxe room - not cheap but good! Also included a P-space in the hotel-backyard. Charming old-pub-atmosphere, near Winchester Cathedral. Nice dinner and breakfast
location between Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth - you can discover those towns, if you have a car
good plenty breakfasts, nearby zoo, pool at the hotel
