This elegant 17th-century country house hotel in Winchester stands in 63 acres of beautiful Hampshire parkland.

The property was full of old world charm - an exceptional place to stay - we ate at the formal dining room and had a wonderful dining experience. The staff (in particular the sommelier) were excellent and went above and beyond what should be expected of them.

Winchester is a lovely place plenty of places to eat and drink, it gets very busy at the weekend though so advisable to book for food, the Christmas market is wonderful but you really need to get there early as the queues are so long.

Make sure when you book for the Christmas market that you prebook meals as most places are fully booked already and it can be hard to find somewhere to eat. We found that it was easier and just as cheap to get a taxi from the hotel into the town. The taxi rank was opposite the bus station but there wasn't any there and you had to call a taxi company and book a taxi. You can view everything thing in 1 day but found out they want you to pay £12.50 each just to go into the cathedral which i think is terrible. We found a sports bar at the top of the high street called O'niels where we had a lovely meal.

History at every turn (we didn't get to see everything).

History at every turn (we didn't get to see everything). Was very wet during our stay but Winchester was still lively with lots of other visitors. There is a lot you can do indoors which was helpful (given the weather). Given the number of visitors Winchester supports a large number of excellent restaurants (the ones we visited were busy and booking beforehand is definitely recommended). Winchester cathedral was number 1 for a visit though the college is a close second. We ate (as a family of four) in the Ivy and whilst the food is very good it is the lively atmosphere that appealed most. The two of us had dinner in the Chesil Rectory (better for foodies than the Ivy). Also highly recommended. We also managed a family lunch in the Wykeham Arms which was also great (very busy with literally no spare tables). Only point to note is that they don't allow children in the bar so not the place to take kids for a pint.

Visiting the cathedral was an amazing experience.

Visiting the cathedral was an amazing experience. Unfortunately we ran out of time to see everything in there, but we do plan on visiting again. The city itself has a lovely vibe to it and is nice and clean. So many old houses and lovely building to look at - my favourite thing to do. Plus, lots of choice of places to eat and drink, and nice shops. It was easy to walk around to all the various places of interest.

I was there for a night en route to my cousin's wedding because of train strikes. Lovely city. Quiet, elegant and with the usual social problems that all such cities face these days. I went to the Cathedral, the ruins of the Bishops' Palace, the Guildhall and the West Gate. Loved it all (although felt that the West Gate was not worth the money). Would be happy to go back again.
