f you’re planning a stay in Dubrovnik, I really recommend choosing the Lapad peninsula. It starts with the Sunset Beach promenade, full of restaurants and a lively nightlife in the evenings. We especially recommend the restaurant El Pulpo, where we had delicious seafood at very reasonable prices. Sunset Beach itself is a city beach with a mix of stones, gravel, and concrete, and it’s not overcrowded. You can also rent water sports equipment a bit further along. Getting to the Old Town is easy with bus number 6, which runs from Lapad through the city for only 2 EUR. Keep in mind, though, that the Old Town is very hot and much more expensive. If you’re renting a car, it’s worth staying on the way from the airport before reaching the Old Town – the prices are much better there, and the views are truly stunning. In fact, the best views of Dubrovnik are when you drive in from the airport side. Lapad itself is beautiful and green, but be prepared for some uphill walking if you plan to explore on foot. Dubrovnik is a fantastic city in terms of its beauty location and historical interest. The problem is the crowds - it is so shockingly overcrowded it’s almost unbearable. We visited in the middle of August during a heat wave which didn’t help. There’s also a sense that the soul has gone out of old town Dubrovnik because everything there is catered to tourists and lacks authenticity. One thing to note, If you are planning go to the beach in Dubrovnik be prepared - it’s incredibly crowded and not really a great option on a short visit. If you base yourself in Dubrovnik for a few days you could then visit Montenegro and Mostar or elsewhere and get beach time, which we had already done. I would visit Dubrovnik to be a short city break and do beach and boat trips etc elsewhere either in Montenegro, or another part of Croatia such as Orebić. If you've never been to Croatia before, you'll probably love Dubrovnik's beauty, food, and people. But if you've been anywhere else in Croatia, Dubrovnik can't compare. It is very touristy, very busy, very expensive, difficult to navigate around due to all the stairs, and offers little to do for kids other than the beach. Dubrovnik and surrounding are a nice place, but very expensive. I felt being ripped off at every corner. Not good value for money especially in peak season. Parking is not only scarce but at extortionate prices. On the other hand public transport was regular, most times overcrowded and a survival of the fittest.
