Dubrovnik is a fantastic city in terms of its beauty location and historical interest. The problem is the crowds - it is so shockingly overcrowded it’s almost unbearable. We visited in the middle of August during a heat wave which didn’t help. There’s also a sense that the soul has gone out of old town Dubrovnik because everything there is catered to tourists and lacks authenticity. One thing to note, If you are planning go to the beach in Dubrovnik be prepared - it’s incredibly crowded and not really a great option on a short visit. If you base yourself in Dubrovnik for a few days you could then visit Montenegro and Mostar or elsewhere and get beach time, which we had already done. I would visit Dubrovnik to be a short city break and do beach and boat trips etc elsewhere either in Montenegro, or another part of Croatia such as Orebić. In short, Dubrovnik makes a fab city break but I would not do it in August nor would I try to incorporate beach time there.Guest review byLisaUnited Kingdom - 8.0

If you've never been to Croatia before, you'll probably love Dubrovnik's beauty, food, and people. But if you've been anywhere else in Croatia, Dubrovnik can't compare. It is very touristy, very busy, very expensive, difficult to navigate around due to all the stairs, and offers little to do for kids other than the beach. Dubrovnik and surrounding are a nice place, but very expensive. I felt being ripped off at every corner. Not good value for money especially in peak season. Parking is not only scarce but at extortionate prices. On the other hand public transport was regular, most times overcrowded and a survival of the fittest. I visited Croatia only two years ago and was overwhelmed by its beauty and also found it very reasonable. The old town is certainly worth a visit but the beaches are too crowded and as most of the beaches are small pebbled coves, sun loungers are priced anything between 25 - 35 euros per bed which makes it very expensive before you even do anything. In fact one day on the beach was so busy , you couldn't reach the sea without stepping over people. The restaurants and bars have become so expensive, everyone asking for cash payments and in many cases bluntly asking for a tip. The Old Town is spectacular and certainly worth a visit, but unfortunately I won't be rushing back to Dubrovnik due to it being too expensive and generally unfriendly nature.Guest review bySaraUnited Kingdom
