Probably the nicest of the 5 villages, in my opinion, and so close to everything. Relatively easy walk to Vernazza with incredible views. Or 5 min walk to train to get between villages. Loads of restaurants to choose from.

I prefer to stay in Monterosso Al Mare because of the large beach with chairs and umbrellas. Also, I like that it’s a larger, flatter village, which is perfect for staying a few nights. Two to three nights is more than enough in Cinque Terre in my opinion. Perfect place for your home base and easy, short train ride to visit the other 4 villages. Can also begin your hike to Vernazza in Monterosso.

I love Cinque Terre.
I love Cinque Terre. Normally I would stay in Vernazza because that's my favourite of the villages, but this time I really wanted to swim as well as hike and the harbour in Vernazza is kind of nasty. But the sea in Monterosso is absolutely beautiful. I went to the free beach at the western side, right under the gigantic statue, and there were beautiful fish you could see through crystal clear water, which stayed crystal clear all day long. And it was fresh. End of August and it still felt refreshing and cool. Plus there are so many more little winding alleys and places to find in Monterosso, so many more than I thought when I spent a few hours here on previous trips. So many more options of places to eat and have an aperitivo, quiet little places off the beaten track, too. It is a little more expensive but a really nice place to land in Cinque Terre and explore the other villages from. I am a convert!AmandaItaly - Scored 1010
Definitely stay in Monterosso in Chique Terre.
Definitely stay in Monterosso in Chique Terre. It has all the beaches and all the quaintness OR modernity you would want all in one place. Go to the other towns via train, walking, or boat as day outings. They are all tiny and take only an hour or two to see. Monterosso has it all in one. Beaches here are awesome!
