Pisa really surprised us with what a lovely experience it was. After hearing negative reviews of the city, we were expecting an overrun with tourists, over priced square shuffling along like herded sheep. But actually it was a pleasant walk through the pretty grounds, and whilst we were very disappointed that the Baptistery wasn't open till 1pm we managed to get into the cathedral and cemetery. There are limited hotels in Pisa that were up to expectations, we only stayed as our flight came in late, and there isn't much else to see in the city. But definitely go visit for half a day before moving onto a neighbouring city. We went onto the Cinque Terre afterwards which was a lovely trip.
We toured the area around the tower, but did not climb the 300 steps up. The Cathedral and Baptistery were beautiful. We walked everywhere and had no problems finding our way. The restaurants are good.
Pisa architecture is beautiful. The place around the tower is a bit congested. It was hard getting a good photo of the tower without people being in the photo, so I would suggest getting there real early for an epic photo. I would say that media inflates the attractions, because it sounded awesome going and seeing the attractions, but once getting there it didn't feel like as big of a deal that media and people made it out to be. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the beauty the most. There are plenty of cabs awaiting by the tower and plenty of souvenirs stands. There's ice cream and restaurants across the street. You can do the attractions in one day, but Florence is just a hour train ride away, so you can combine a day trip in Pisa and a day trip in Florence. We did both attractions in one day, due to having small kids and skipped out on actually going in any of the attractions. I also wouldn't recommend driving. As driving is hectic and can get tight and congested. Cab and train everywhere. Less hassle and no stress.
Pisa is a beautiful city but full of tourists! Not easy to find a different restaurant then the classic tourist restaurants. I can recommend to walk away from the Pisa tower and Main Street there are nice Cosy streets nearby and more caratteristic.
A very interesting place, a must visit. If you are independent of tour groups it is best to book a tour of the leaning tower in the afternoon. Not so busy. Walking the streets around The Tower was a great experience
History, art, culture, music ( great concerts in open squares, most nights.). This city is so much more than that famous leaning tower. We loved it. We’re going back this Saturday for an all-day festival. Fireworks, luminary show, apparently many people come to Pisa for this feast day. The city will be packed.
