Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and cable cars. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of tunnels you can visit and even a Graeco-Roman theater which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artifacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.
As for accommodations, Booking.com has a wealth of hotels near Naples Airport, old town B&Bs, city center apartments and more to help you make the most of your stay.
We had a great trip and for us 3 days was just right.
We had a great trip and for us 3 days was just right. We visited Pompeii, hiked Vesuvius, caught a ferry for lunch in Provida, and the Metro to the football stadium. There is loads more to do if you stay longer. The city was not expensive to eat out, food of course exceptional and people really friendly. It felt like old Italy more than other places we've been. Less English spoken, more authentic, very busy during the day (insane traffic), not so much at night. We walked mainly, the Metro is also cheap and easy to use.

Naples is kind of unique.
Naples is kind of unique. Its kind of a bit mad, kind of a bit run down, but it has this infectious, exuberant vibe. The Neapolitans themselves are just fantastic - genuinely friendly and kind. They are SO proud of their city. Naples claims to have the best coffee in Italy, and its probably true. It's also the pizza capital of Italy - the birthplace of the margarita pizza - but also has great for pasta and seafood. After dark in Naples is party time, and it seems that every night is party night!
The traffic is total madness, and people on scooters appear out of nowhere, even in pedestrian areas. But other than that, we felt very safe in the city.
This is a great place to stay if you want to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum. Both are just a short train ride away, which can get you there long before the crowds. The public transport, its good, cheap and safe.
Herculaneum - Pompeii's less well-known cousin - was a highlight for us. We visited in late May, at around 11am, and there were no crowds, just a few parties of enthusiastic history lovers and some school groups.

We were really surprised how dirty the streets were.
We were really surprised how dirty the streets were. Rubbish lined every street . Graffiti everywhere, smokers everywhere. Some lovely buildings but spoilt by the mess. Train ticket attendants were not friendly and were unhelpful. We felt they really disliked having to speak English at Napoli Central. The ones at University linear line were much better. Restaurants were good . Good base to tour Mt Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The Historic district is old, and not everything is in great...
The Historic district is old, and not everything is in great repair, but there are wonderful small cafés and trattoria's that you can find, and if you are interested in history and in visual art there is a lot to find in Naples. We were somewhat disappointed by the murals in the Spanish Quarter (most seemed only slightly more than spontaneous graffiti), but the strong sense of community spirit and the sincerely welcoming attitude of everyone we met there made up for it!
Absolutely make the trek to the waterfront (Santa Lucia and Chiaia) for a delicious seafood dinner at least once!
If you find a good hotel (after a not-so-good experience at a different establishment we very happily settled into the Palazzo Caracciolo, which was wonderful!), Naples has a lot to offer and it is close enough for day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast!

Santa Lucia is the perfect location if you enjoy culture,...
Santa Lucia is the perfect location if you enjoy culture, sea air and food. There were at least a dozen restaurants on our block. We were 50 metres from the sea and a ten minute walk to Spagnoli shops and restaurants. Bring sturdy walking shoes and sunblock to walk to your hearts content. The elevator to the ‘castel’ walk was right across the street. Enjoy!
The owner, Enzo, is the sweetest person we met in our entire trip in Italy. He is super helpful and kind. As a sweet gesture, he even gifted us a box of chocolates for our journey ahead. There was coffee and breakfast available at the B&B. Enzo was very generous to give us welcome drinks as we entered. Room was clean and spacious and had all the amenities needed. The bathroom was bigger than usually seen in Italy and had ample amount of space. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting Naples!
nice attention from the front desk, helpful with information regards excursions and also let me leave my luggage even before check in time since I had an excursion earlier. Also great attention from the 2 employees at the breakfast, very nice and polite. I also appreciate the services that you can find at a hotel, as Italy is full of B&B and RBNBs i prefer the professional attention and amenities that you can find at a hotel ( as safety box, early or late check in, luggage storage, etc )
The vibe of the room and location was so cool! We loved the update room and lighting, it added to the mood. The bath was absolutely amazing and relaxing, we used this to relax after our 14 days in Italy before our flight out of Naples. We loved their communication and they helped us set up a taxi for 4am! The hosts were absolutely wonderful and if we come back to Naples to spend more time we would stay here again. The amenities were plentiful and correctly listed.
The flat is a bit claustrophobic and not light enough. The double bed is 2 singles who kept moving away from each other. The breakfast is composed of cakes, jam, nutella and sweet drinks. Too much for me!!!! This is not my type of breakfast but that how it is in Italy unfortunately. The transport near the house is quite rare, so need to walk to take any bus, when they exist!!!!. I found the transport in Naples horrendous. That has nothing to do with El Nido.
I spent many years in Southern Italy and have been to dozens of different hotels and B&Bs. I know that the more affordable options often leave a great deal to be desired, and the actual rooms/apartments do not always match the online descriptions. Not this one! I have been very positively surprised with modern and practical facilities, exceptional cleanness, and very professional and helpful customer service. The price and location were very reasonable too.
The owners were so kind and shared with us so many tips for visiting Naples and surroundings. They left the apartment fully prepared for a great breakfast every day and a great staying.
Also, Patty came in the middle of our stay and brought us the most amazing sweets we ate in Italy. Also, her parents drove me by car to an open pharmacy.
The accomodation is 10-15 minutes walking from Naples Stazzione Centrale and it’s easy to acces all Naples’ key points.
We stayed at 3 B&Bs during our time in Italy and this place was our favourite! The coast was literally just around the corner, with so many restaurants there & within walking distance. Sebastiano kindly got us an iron for our clothes. It was so cosy, perfect for a couple or 2 friends with plenty space to move around. I'm an interior designer so I was in love with the (comfy) cushions & the beautiful entrance door, this place is a hidden gem in Naples.
Having stayed here on our first night in Italy, we were delighted to be able to return two weeks later for our last night! Having spent a day exploring Naples, we grabbed food from a local restaurant and were able to relax. The next morning it was a few minute drive to the car hire to return our car then hop on the shuttle bus to the airport. The apartment was perfectly placed for our needs and helped make the journey home pleasant.
After a tour of Amalfi coast and driving around the crazy roads of Italy, was expecting a small and tough to get to apartment in Naples, was it pleasantly surprised when we arrived to Antonio waiting to help us unload our luggage, valet our rental car, and show us to our high ceiling and modern room. Only stayed in Naples 1 night but would definitely consider a couple more nights at the Hermes hotel in the future
Extra spacious, Foro Carolino was the highlight of all our hotels on this trip to Italy! The place was also clean and had amenities you will need. Staff were extremely helpful and attentive. 4 stations by metro (2-min walk) to Napoli Centrale, we liked that it was away from the bustle but still near enough. Special mention to morning breakfast that is freshly prepared at the b&b, amazing!
The staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly. The pool areas were great and kept clean. A lovely view of Naples and the Volcano. A good base for our last couple of nights in Italy but the location was not ideal and there was no where to eat outside of the hotel but the lovely receptionist did order take out Pizza for us one night which we enjoyed sitting around the pool area.
We loved this location! So easy to access all public transportation though we walked most places. We felt very safe, and the room was clean and comfortable, with espresso to enjoy in the morning (beware that in Italy, you have to manually stop the brewing process). We were provided an excellent map, umbrellas, thoroughly enjoyed this accommodation and Naples.
Sergio is a fantastic host. The busyness of Naples was great to be part of but to be able enjoy a noise free space in the evenings and mornings with a beautiful view of Vesuvius was the perfect end to two a week trip through Italy. Breakfast was delicious. Sergio, again was so lovely, welcoming and generous with his time and advice. Highly recommend
Valentina is the kindest and most welcoming host we encountered on our trip to Italy. The property is an oasis inside Naples and her breakfast in the morning is absolutely legendary. We loved our stay here and would not hesitate to come back. Thank you so much for everything, we will never forget our experience in Naples :)
Loved that everything was super clean and nice. We had a great balcony and big bathroom compared to other hotels in Italy. The hotel replied quickly when we had any questions via email and was very hospitable throughout the entire stay. We would definitely stay again and recommend Scaramantico Rooms.
This beautiful room was perfect for our stay in Naples! The decor was stunning and the room was well taken care of. The washroom was spacious with a large shower and double sink. The host was helpful. The location was ideal. What a lovely stop on our trip in Italy!
Perfectly located hotel, just a short 3 min walk away from the heart of Naples, with really well equipped and decorated rooms. It was the best place to finish off our honeymoon in Italy. The breakfast was topnotch and the service even better.
Super neat and clean rooms . Well equipped. Near the Naples central station . One of the best rooms my family have stayed in this trip to Italy.
Will definitely stay there again
We realy enjoyed our stay. Location is amazing! Perfect place to walk around and enjoy Naples streets to feel true Italy. Room was nice and tidy. Also cleaned every day.
This location is in the heart of the historical district of Naples! Best Tandem restaurant right across. If you want to feel like living in Italy, this is your hotel!
