Can't say a lot as I was only there for one night, but it seemed a pleasant fairly quiet town with an attractive central square. Many white buildings, looked historic but no time to find out. Would think it is well worth getter no to know better. Trains from/to London Liverpool St.
We planned our trip to go to chelmsford races, would have been better if 'the night of queen' hadn't been cancelled , but enjoyed our stay, the hotel was good value for money and would definitely stay here again
Braintree was created as a Saxon trading post and so has a lot of history. It is now very handy for Stansted airport. Freeport shopping is just a stone's throw away with all the retail outlets plus cinema, swimming pool, tenpin bowling etc. A free bus runs there from Victoria street every 15 minutes.
Lots of places to eat and a nice street market on Saturday, very handy for exploring the area. interesting old buildings and nice shopping arcades. Town is kept very clean and was quiet in the evening.
My ancestors came from Braintree. I by mistake got off the train at Braintree Village Mall. I had a great lunch, bought two nice shirts, and was able to take a free bus ride to town. I was able to visit the library, museum, and other shops. I bought a ring in Braintree that will always be super meaningful to me. I also like the American connections to Braintree as well as the rich Christian history of John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress, and the Pilgrims who strayed there. The shops, food, buildings, and people were wonderful. AFTER I had a delicious lunch the café staff trusted me to go a block away to use an ATM machine as they didn't use a card. I found that very kind and trusting. I loved the shops and decent prices. I would have liked to stay longer if I hadn't had a schedule to follow!
I have since received a £100 parking fine for staying at the hotel even though I was a guest. At no time during my stay was I made aware that I needed to enter my registration details on a PDA in reception. It now seems that the parking firm are now a law unto themselves and I may or may not get the fine waved.
