Gateway to the Inner Hebrides
Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

We were using Oban to access the Cal Mac ferry to Lismore, as my partner's dad is buried there. Everything went very smoothly and we had a nice sailing there and back. We enjoyed a couple of excellent meals at the Waterfront Sea Food Restaurant and ES-USK Seafood Restaurant. Enjoyed an evening of live music and a few drinks in The Oban Inn. Love this port as watching boats coming in and out to and from the islands is so interesting. Gift shops are lovely to walk round and we also enjoyed seeing the museum with artifacts from the wars as well as history of the town. Oban is the gateway to the isles but is also such a beautiful and pleasant little town with much to do and explore. Something that is often overlooked but always a must for me is at the end of the day to head up to McCaig's Tower and watch the sunset over Mull, Lismore and Morven. The coastal street was lovely and lively with bars, restaurants and hotels predominating everywhere. Of this main street and the standards and views are quite difirent. Of course Oban is the hub to catch a ferry to other islands and of course Fingals cave on Staffa. or take a local boat trip out to see the dolphins and perhaps, as we did, manage to see the white tailed sea eagle too.
