Overall I found St. Albans disappointing.
Overall I found St. Albans disappointing. Yes, the Cathederal is wonderful and the Roman remains worth a visit but the town itself was nowhere near as charming as I had anticipated. I was expecting an interesting mediaeval town of higgly piggly streets but these were very limited. Pubs were ordinary for the most part, the Mermaid was the hands down winner. We loved the Roman remains and Museum and really enjoyed visiting the Cathedral, which was free and very welcoming. We spent a very interesting wet afternoon at the preserved Signal Box (my husband is a rail enthusiast!) and also at the De Haviland museum just the other side of the motorway. The Cathedral is well worth visiting.
The Cathedral is well worth visiting. There is an abundance of top-end shops as well as the usual ones. The Wednesday market is very good - lots of stalls selling different nationality foods. The restaurants are very good and we had a lovely meal in Zizzi. Travellers should be aware that the roads are quite steep and there are lots of cobble stone parts, so be careful when walking around if you are a little unsteady on your feet.Guest review byChristineUnited Kingdom

Corridors and general areas were also good apart from the dining area which could have benefitted from some cleaning of the carpet. There was a very good choice of food and drinks for breakfast and, overall, this was very good except that the hot food tended to be a little on the cool side, particularly the scrambled eggs which were stone cold.
