The location in the old town was wonderful; an easy walk to most of the inner city and its sights and an easy connection via bus or cab to sights around the area. The breakfast was quite good. The quality was excellent and the dining area was cozy. The exceptional factor was the staff. To a person, they were friendly and helpful.

The service and welcoming ability of the staff was wonderful. I happened to get my car towed Saturday night in Trieste, and without the involvement of the staff, I would never have retrieved it so quickly and relatively easily.
I am so grateful to all three staff members I worked with. They were just wonderful. Thank you, and my sincere recommendations to stay there again. A wonderful experience, all around.

Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the northwest. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city center are Roman theater remains, with columns from the Roman forum standing next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square hosts some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Water sports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffeehouses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodations include hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.

The town is relatively small and easy to get around on foot- although we did take a bus to the castle and the cathedral as it was a steep walk up to them.
The Cathedral is certainly worth a visit.
We didn't have time to go to Mirimar castle unfortunately but the sunset form the pier is spectacular.

Trieste has a lot of potential but you can see part of the city hasn't been well-maintainted. Traffic and parking are horrible but once you are on foot it is easy to get around. There aren't that many things to do, but it is worth spending the day there.

A hidden gem of a location. We wouldnt have visited had it not been the final destination after a cruise. We loved and are so pleased we decided to stay overnight before flying home. A beautiful place.

Trieste was a pleasant surprise.
Trieste was a pleasant surprise. We chose it as a convenient place to fly into for a trip on into Slovenia and on the basis of reviews decided to stay for 2 nights (so effectively a day and a half). However, we really enjoyed it - there was far more to the city than we expected and we left with plenty still to see on our next trip. It has the buzz of an Italian city without the traffic and crowds you would get in, say, Florence or Rome. The city centre is further from the station than Google Maps might suggest, though, so I would recommend getting a bus - there are plenty of choices and an information office in the station itself.

Unfortunately it was just an overnight trip to embark on a cruise the next day, sadly the airline who flew us there (ITA) lost our luggage and we spent all our time during our stay shopping for clothing, toiletries etc, so not enough time to appraise trieste.

We're widely travelled in Italy, but not to the north east of the country. Trieste is an exciting place. Very peasant for a few days. We had 5 days there and included a day out to Gorizia (though this was disappointing despite being European city of culture in 2025!). Great shops and cafes - which we thought offered good value for money. We also enjoyed the museums - some of which were free. We were lucky to stay during a music festival and attended an excellent concert in the opera house.
We also stayed in Udine (an hour away by train) for a few days which was also interesting and pleasant. The two cities made for a really good Italian holiday.
Only thing we didn't like was the wind! it was quite breezy for September, though understand the Bora wind in winter can be exceptionally strong. Bad weather meant our plane to Trieste airport (30 mins by rail from the city) was diverted to Venice which was tedious.
The room was relatively spacious, even with the bathroom included. The bed was quite comfortable, and the AC effectively cooled the room. Despite the contactless check-in, we received detailed and timely information about the apartment’s status, location, and check-in process. We were also able to check in early, as our room was ready ahead of the check-in time.
The canal and the Unity of Italy square is nearby - within 15 mins of walk.
The apartment is located in a beautiful, recently renovated palace in a pedestrian street, close to the seaside and the major piazzas of Trieste. Even though it is an apartment, it is operated by a hotel, so you can check in any time and you can have breakfast in the hotel building, which is literally two minutes walk away. The place is clean, quiet and quite spacious. The kitchen is well equipped.
I traveled for a conference and I stayed at Hotel Portacavana as a practical option. This is no luxury hotel, but it was very affordable, and was comfortable and clean. Also, Christian (staff) was very helpful and kind. I would definitely consider staying there if I travel to Trieste for work and need practical accommodation.
Hotel is in the centre of Trieste and a few minutes away from the train station.

Rooms spacious and very clean.
Nice and modern hotel.
