Top notch dinner at Oriental steak restaurant at Kobe MERIKEN hotel we stayed at, one of best meals ever. We enjoyed walkable waterfront around hotel, lovely lights, lots of shopping, restaurants, Chinatown, and foreign area museums. Tried multiple wagyu beef and multi cultural cusines.

Be careful taxi driver over charge A small but important lesson about Using Uber in Kobe. During our trip to Japan, we used Uber seral times without any problems, However, Just before leaving Kobe, we had an unexpected experience. we Booked an Uber from our hotel to Airport Bus terminal, Uber app showed an estimated fare of around 1600 yen also we made an payment. About ten minutes we arrived, the taxi driver asked us to pay again, We used an AI translator to explain that that we paid through Uber, but he did not allow us to get off taxi and talk to someone over phone a while, then open door let us go. Because we were in a hurry to catch our flight and also have a problem to communicate with him, we did not have time to investigate the situation. Later we got an Uber bill he had charged our credit card about 19,000---around twelve times the original estimate. After return to Australia we have complained to Uber and the company is investigating the charge. This experience also taught us that an Uber booking in Japan may be handle by a local taxi company. Uber may simply be acting as the booking platform. For future travelers: Do not assume the estimate fare is always the final price; If a driver asks you to pay again, check the reason carefully Check and ask the final receipt immediately after the trip. We are still waiting the Uber investigation and hope this is the driver's mistake. Despite this incident, we still had a positive experience with Japanese taxi services. We used Uber many time, and every other trip was smooth. The lesson is simple: do not trust technology blindly, when money is involved, checking the final bill can save you a lot of trouble.

Kobe itself is quite interesting from the harbour to the hills as well as the outer suburbs. I have family in Kobe and always enjoy visiting. It's a lot more laid back than Osaka and Tokyo. As with most cities in Japan, transport, food and shopping is always good. There are also many interesting places to sightsee and activities to experience. Motomachi chinatown is worth seeing, as is Harbourland. Take a ride on the ferris wheel and check out the city from the air. Mt Rokko is worth visiting...take the cable car for something different. Kitano district gives a good view of the old English & European homes of past eras. Go to Sannomiya and walk under the trainline through the alleways. Transport is easy and plentiful.

Kobe was incredible.

Kobe was incredible. It's a city of jazz and hidden tiny bars. Nunobiki Herb Gardens is a must do as is the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art. The perfect calm reprieve in the Japan city itinerary, I will definitely be back.

Kobe is a beautiful city to visit.

Kobe is a beautiful city to visit. There are lots of different areas to explore, covered arcades and shopping malls, little streets with boutique shops and small friendly bars and cafe's. There is a lot of young talent creating coffee and food offerings. The proximity to nature was great for us too, we could go walking in the forest during the morning and walk into the city for coffees, wines, food and shopping in the afternoon and evening. And the beautiful forested hills are within view of most areas of the city. We particularly enjoyed the Takenaka Carpentry Museum, Nunobiki Ropeway, herb gardens and water falls, Sorakuen Garden, and the Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park. We loved the sake, we loved the cakes. There is a lot of different food to try, and the people were generally friendly, welcoming and tolerant of our patchy Japanese. We are planning to visit Kobe again.

Kobe is a wonderful city in Japan, that is very close to the...

Kobe is a wonderful city in Japan, that is very close to the many attractions in Osaka, but also only about 1 hour away from Himeji and its famous castle. Harborland is a great shopping spot with wonderful views at night and a great Brazilian beef restaurant. I often stay on Port Island with its super-convenient Port Liner monorail that connects to the major hub of Sannomiya Station.

The location is tranquil and beautiful. The hotel gives a very authentic vibe and you to experience a truly Japanese Onsen experience. The breakfast, just like the hotel in general, is mainly for Japanese tourists but does include yoghurt, eggs, jam and some white bread and fruits. The dinner - a Japanese dinner with steam cooked meat and buffet of tempura, sushi and other Japanese food - was incredibly yummy. We enjoyed walking around in borrowed kimonos and the peacefulness in the hot baths.

The best hotel we have stayed in during our ten-day trip in Japan. If I come to Kobe again, I will definitely stay in this hotel again. The room is very spacious, with a very comfortable large bathtub and a large toilet. It's a new and fashionable modern hotel, and the price is surprisingly not expensive compared to other big cities (about ₤78per night for a double room).
