I loved the character and ambiance of this property. It was everything I hoped it would be. The pool and the grounds are very nice, and loved the individual houses. The staff was always available and very friendly. The beds/bedding also very nice! Breakfast was simple, but lovely. Go for the carribean rice, beans, eggs, toast for local flare! Also, the rocking chairs on our private porch was an added enjoyment. The shower was large, and very nice! Especially loved the property at night.....such cool lighting!

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.

A great laid back type of caribbean seafront.
A great laid back type of caribbean seafront. Good bars and a hippy vibe.
Some decent supermarkets in town and on the road out to Manzanilla.
The bar in the Puerto Viejo Hotel on Friday night is a must.
Very good location, Puerto Viejo is a small town and Pagalù hostel was 2 minutes walk away from the bustle of the beach, restaurants and bars. There is a supermarket nearby which is great for buying food and drink for cooking. There were hot showers which are always nice no matter the climate. The kitchen is well equipped and very clean, there is a nice social space. Jared on the reception was very helpful and assisted with preparations for visiting the nearby Cahuita National Park.
Comfortable bed, great coffee, beautiful garden and shared space to relax in and lovely owners and staff. We were able to rent bikes for $5 a day which I recommend doing - Gandoca Manzanillo park and Punta Uva beach are a very manageable ride away. There is also a mini market and a couple of nice restaurants nearby. A taxi/tuk tuk is needed to get to Puerto Viejo and back and it can be a bit tricky to find one on your own, so ask for contact details.
Really beautiful hotel with nice, comfortable and very proper rooms, small kitchen with well working fridge and freezer and a bathroom with a large and hot shower. Puerto Viejo (5-10’) and the beach (2’) are within walking distance and the way is very safe also in the dark. The owner and the whole staff is really friendly and helpful. Parking and towels for the beach are provided for free. we can recommend the Hotel Sunshine Caribe to everybody!
The property was beautiful. Tucked away in the jungle, peaceful with sounds of nature. The aesthetic of the rooms and pool area were the best I’ve seen in Puerto Viejo. The owner, Alessandra, is the sweetest lady. She was very helpful and accommodating when I needed to stay an extra night or needed a car to the center. The staff was amazing as well. They washed my clothes and cooled breakfast daily. Best stay. High recommend!!!
I booked this hotel by accident and I am really glad that I did. The garden villas have enough privacy provided by the vegetation and allow for relaxed stay in the semi-open kitchen and terrace. Within walking distance to Playa Cocles, Punta Uva beach is a short drive away. There is a supermarket nearby on the main road. I wish I could have stayed longer.
The poeple of the hotel are very friendly, welcoming and help you with everything! The hotel is very new and the architecture is just beautiful. The breakfast and the dinner we had was really great and diverse. The hotel is located directly at the beach, so the location is one of the best things. We also saw a sloth and a tucan there!
The hotel itself is beautiful! It's located right near the caribean sea, it looks very exotic and luxurious, and the staff is great. The rooms are nicely decorated as well, and the food was good. We really enjoyed our time here.
Having a cocktail at the beach terrace is the ultimate holiday experience.
This was our first trip to Puerto Viejo and Cariblue exceeded our expectations! The resort is beautiful and the location is perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. We loved the pool, food and the beach which is an easy walk.
If you have the option to add the breakfast, do it. It's amazing!
Very friendly personnel. The hotel is very relaxed but not too quiet. We had the cabin with the shared bathroom, but it was the cleanest and nicest bathroom we have had during our entire journey in CR so far! Definitely recommend Saranda for anyone staying in puerto viejo.
Beautiful Hotel with big and comfortable rooms. Great swimming pool & friendly staff. We had the best piñas coladas ever!!! on Valentines day made by Joel. We travelled with our MTB and there was enough space in the room's terrace to keep them safe.
This hotel exceeded our expectations. The grounds are beautiful and our room was exceptionally clean. Chiquita Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Viejo. We will definitely be returning here on our next trip!
This is a lovely hotel with beautiful gardens and pool. It feels very peaceful despite being near the central bars and restaurants of Puerto Viejo. We had a relaxing one night stay, but could have easily stayed much longer!
The property location was perfect! It had a beach front view from the restaurant area and was a 10 minute walk from the center of Puerto Viejo. There was a community kitchen and several free on-site activities each day.
The hotel is located close to a major supermarket in Puerto Viejo. The rooms are spacious and clean, however not too well ventilated. The staff is accomodating, the breakfast is tasty.
This was our second stay at this hotel. It's clean, comfortable, safe, has a great pool, has A/C, and offers a great breakfast. A really comfortable place to stay in Puerto Viejo.
the best staff and the best vibe close to the beach, really good for both chilling and meeting people and you have both parties and nature nearby, I got stuck for a month :D
