Alfriston is old and beautiful with many half timbered buildings. It has a lovely village green and church. The Clergy House is well worth a visit. There is a good choice of places to eat. We chose Poco which was good but very expensive. The Smugglers Inn was excellent, friendly service, beautiful food and good value for money.

there is a very nice coffee shop called the Singing kettle with delicious cakes. And we had supper at the George and Dragon which was very good both food and ambience. We were walking the South Downs way towards Eastbourne. I was disappointed with Alfriston generally. A couple of second rate antique type shops and an uninspiring deli. Alfriston had been billed as a jewel which it most definitely wasnt in my humble opinion. Not worth a detour.

Unfortunately because of the times of year (December) most places in and around Alfriston were closed. However this did not detract from this peaceful, pretty and historic village. I would definitely go again, earlier in the year when places are open We ate at the place we stayed ‘The Olde Smugglers Inne’ but they only serve excellent food in the evenings. It is fairly flat and easy to walk around the village.

Alfriston is well worth a longer visit than the few hours we spent here. The high street has so many old and interesting buildings including about three pubs. Behind the high street is a village green with the 14th century church which we did visit. Its on the South Downs Way and well worth a stop.

Alfriston is very old , historic and scenic.

Alfriston is very old , historic and scenic. The George pub is from 1397 and there are other old buildings, churches and interesting places to explore. There is a fantastic bookstore, filled with great ideas as well as books. There are many walks in the valley or you can go down to the Downs of Seaford. It would be a good base for relaxing and walking but helpful if you had a car.

The George Inn is a very atmospheric place, and, having stayed at a couple of other places in Alfriston, it provides the best price - quality - atmosphere combination. As long as you like a pub that has been going strong for a few centuries, and accept to watch your head (I am quite tall).
