The room was lovely with a comfortable bed, mini kitchen and en suite bathroom. You could park in the nearby parking lot for £5/24hours or on the street for free from 6pm-8am. The concierge was friendly. It's across the road from Strood train station for quick access to London St Pancras

Welcoming and gracious hostess Alice showed me to a huge, lovely room with a great view. The room was spotless, as was the bathroom. I enjoyed a cup of tea in front of a wood burner, and had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was very yummy and kept me going all day. I am hoping to go back for a weekend, for pleasure not business though!! Highly recommend North Downs Barn.

The apartment was wonderful, snug, warm and cosy. The location was good, a short walk from town. I could see the castle and cathedral from the back window, especially lovely as the Christmas Market was open and beautifully lit up. The kitchen contained everything necessary for self-sufficiency, the bed and sofa were very comfortable, the television a good size and the general decor chic and tasteful.

This is the standard of accommodation that all guest houses should aspire to. Beautiful quiet peaceful setting, extremely comfortable bed, extras left in room, clean smart decor, matching furniture, choice of breakfast, all for little money. Well done. Amazing.

Going to bed and waking up to the tide going in and out was magical.
The bedroom was comfy and cosy, the bathroom fittings and extras felt like luxury.
The hosts are really friendly but also give you space to relax.
Breakfast was top notch with fresh fruit, croissants, choice of cereals and a choice of four hot options.
I would definitely stay again and have recommended it to friends and family.
Castle and cathedral are first class. Eastgate House very interesting. Good Italian restaurant and plenty of other choices. Everywhere within easy walking distance. Whole High Street noisy on Saturday night. Guildhall Museum, Restoration House and Huguenot Museum shut for our visit. Tourist Information Office shut down

Rochester is very charming.
Rochester is very charming. The High Street is very lovely with lots of quality second hand shops, if this is your thing. I was absolutely mesmerized by the castle. Well worth climbing the stairs all to the top, especially on a sunny day, the view is amazing. (check for opening times).
The cathedral is really beautiful, do go inside if you are there. You can just go in and explore the cathedral or do a guided tour (also check for opening times).
The town has a very rich history.
You could also choose do do a walking trail along the river.
The Royal Crown Pub has a lot of character and the food was really tasty.

I think some money needs to be spent updating the decor of the hotel and rooms. The room rate is inexpensive and hotel is in a good location but it is looking a bit worn. There was a crack in the top corner of room near the front window of our room and given the connection of the hotel with Charles Dickens, the hotel undersells itself. There was also loud music coming from the bar downstairs in same hotel complex.

Where was the staff?
Why was the gates locked?
Why was there not a message on the gate or at reception?
How is this hotel allowed to remain in relation to health and safetytt?

Different places and things appeal to different people. OK.
Different places and things appeal to different people. OK. But I'm more than happy to put in a word for Rochester, It was, until 1998 when "Medway" (population 250,000 was created from Rochester, Chatham, Strood, Gillingham and Rainham, all today more or less contiguous) a historic and important small City.
Now Rochester is just a "Town", which seems frankly ludicrous. Population only 60,000 and they have problems. The High Street includes far too many Charity Shops, although also some beautiful and historic buildings. Too close to London. But Rochester also has the second oldest Cathedral in England, and still largely Norman Architecture rather than Canterbury's huge late Gothic. Rochester also boasts the tallest and best preserved Norman castle keep in both England and France. Then there are all the links with Charles Dickens and much else besides. And then the Chatham Historic Dockyard, worth a day's time of anyone interested in British history and only a few miles from Rochester.
I note the 2021 Lonely Planet Great Britain (page 162) manages just over 2 column inches on Chatham Dockyard. And that's it. Not even a mention of Rochester or "Medway" in the index. That, in my book, is all you need to know about "Guide Books"!

The historic High Street is a short walk from the train station. The pavements and road on the High Street can be uneven, with cobbles in places , which adds to the charm.
Favorite places to eat-in are: The Quills (offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails), Padrino's Pizzeria (eat in & takeaway/delivery), Cathedral Pie (offering traditional pie and mash with parsley sauce/gravy, jellied eels), Pizza Express and there are also tapas, Japanese, fish and chips and a variety of cafes and bars.
The Cathedral, Castle and local museums are always interesting, with local events going on.
The location was beautiful. Set in the countryside with immaculate garden, plenty of room to park and the barn has been lovingly renovated with tasteful decor and furnishings. The owners were friendly and accommodating with great suggestions of places to eat and visit. The breakfast selection was varied, nicely presented and more importantly delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return when we visit family in Kent again.
As I was there to dance with my Morris side at the Rochester Sweeps Festival, the fact that the event begins right outside the hotel was ideal. Another benefit was the fact that I could park my car at a safe location within the environs of the hotel throughout our stay. The bed was enormous compared to other places we stay at for folk festivals during the year.
The Hotel is the typical British, countryside place where you can enjoy the actual Brit feeling. Very traditional and this is the key point which makes the hotel special, there is no pretence to offer something which is not truly part of the English hospitality.
The apartment was beautifully decorated and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Located across the bridge from Rochester high street, easy walking distance to the castle and cathedral.
Friendly hotel in a perfect location on the high street for all the sights of Rochester. Room excellent, lovely breakfast. Hotel staff very helpful and friendly. Car park very useful.
N/A. By careful parking it is possible to get two cars parked safely. One small and one medium sized and this is important in Rochester, which has long been a parking nightmare.
Wonderful staff. Quick walk from train station. A hidden jewel architecturally. Nicely appointed rooms. Across street from Cathedral and Rochester Castle. Very clean!
we walked in reception wanted to use the tiolet witch was siold no towel my partner would not use the tiolet we walked out and booked another hotel wich was clean
Nice little hotel, was very quiet which was good, staff were very friendly and helpful. Will 100% come back here, would recommend to friends and family :)
