Amazing aircon in the room which was a god send in the heat. Staff were all lovely. Good location, surprisingly quiet considering it’s next to a busy main road. Nice hand soap and shower gel supplied. Curtains were nice black out curtains.

Of course there is the football stadium, a very fine sight...

Of course there is the football stadium, a very fine sight now that is has been rejuvenated and the two statues of Ramsey and Robson (outside and a reminder that no other club has provided England with two international managers straight from domestic success, one even managed the World Cup winning team) as well as that of Kevin Beattie add to the sense of honour. Beyond that there is the modest but impressive splendour of Christchurch Mansion set in the verdant Christchurch Park, historic buildings like The Ancient House with its characterful pargeting, the much improved dockside area and residents who usually take time to get to know but are worth the effort. In short, it's like a human version of Norwich...

Never been before. I'm not a townie / city girl but everyone was friendly. I was very surprised as to how courteous the drivers in Ipswich were compared to other towns / cities. Lots of patience with me who was unfamiliar with Ipswich and made a few wrong turns etc,

Not as lot to see in Ipswich. Typical town centre with lots of shops. Good selection of pubs and places to eat. The area around the old docks has been re-developed and is very nice but a bit expensive.

The town has vast potential, especially for those interested in built heritage with a vast number of historic buildings, but overall it has the sense and feel of a ghost town, hardly any one around apart from numerous homeless people who unfortunately have nowhere to go but the shop doorways. Many interesting shops have limited opening hours and overall it is not a particularly happy place to be. I got an apocalyptic feeling wandering around, OK looking up at the glorious architecture, but not so good at Street level..

I lived in Ipswich for 15 years and left 3 years ago.

I lived in Ipswich for 15 years and left 3 years ago. On my recent visit it became obvious to me just how much this town has deteriorated in the 3 years that I have been gone. It was progressively going downhill before I left, but it's even worse now. Even my friends that still live there have almost nothing good to say about it. There are still some lovely places to visit like Christchurch Park and Mansion, the waterfront and the Marina etc. And there are some wonderful pubs and restaurants to be found like The Greyhound, The Woolpack, The Nelson, The Dove (pubs) and The Salthouse, The Dhaka, The Ocean Spray (restaurants). Ipswich is also a great location to stay in if you wish to explore the Suffolk countryside and its beautiful, charming villages like Kersey, Lavenham, Southwold etc. Woodbridge and Melton are nearby, as are Levington and Felixstowe. Bury St. Edmunds is a little further afield but well worth a visit. But as a venue for a short break or a longer stay, forget Ipswich and look for somewhere nicer.

The Salthouse is a very comfortable hotel with views of the marina at Ipswich and close to shops in the town centre. Ipswich has a fine array of old buildings many from the seventeenth century and before - well worth a visit. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The in-room breakfast was excellent. There is good well-managed on-site parking. Ipswich is close to world-class heritage sites including Flatford Mill, the location for many of the paintings of the eighteenth and nineteenth century painter John Constable.

I stayed a week in order to attend an event at nearby Trinity Park with my dog. I had an excellent stay - the staff, without exception, were the friendliest of any hotel I have ever stayed in - nothing was too much trouble. The room was a decent size and recently decorated and the bathroom appears new. Dogs are welcome in the bar area (where you can also choose to eat) and the breakfasts are fantastic. All in all, my dog and I were made to feel very welcome (and a special thank you to Maisie for the dog treats!)
