Hotel Iris, hotel in Perugia

The Iris is in a 17th-century building, close to Perugia's Rocca Paolina fortress and the Sant'Ercolano Church. The hotel's wide panoramic terrace offers views of the old city and the hills.

This hotel was everything we wanted-- a beautiful old building, minimally updated. We loved the high windows facing into the gardens of trees, the murals on the ceiling, the ancient balcony for coffee in the morning. The room had been updated with a minimal modern bathroom in way that preserved the murals, which was very cool. Even in the heat of summer we were comfortable with two fans and the windows open, and waking up to the quiet sounds of breeze and churchbells outside was amazing. A short shady walk from the Rocca Paolina and the historic centre. We passed on coffee and breakfast at the hotel and walked 3 minutes for coffee nearby which was great. But the patio outside is nice for a drink in the evening.

FAQs about hotels in Perugia

Undulating Uniqueness

The ancient Etrurian city of Perugia forms a unique and romantic pattern, and is surrounded by green hills. Take the escalators, go up to the Rocca, and admire the panorama of juxtaposed layers of churches and ‘palazzi’ built during thousands of years. Perugia’s Old Town still houses several hotels and restaurants that are centuries old.

The city has a vibrant cultural life and is home to several important institutions, such as the renowned local university, the University for Foreigners, and other institutes. The International Journalism Festival, the Umbria Jazz, and the Eurochocolate Festival are major annual activities. Check the hotel availability in advance if you’re planning to visit Italy and Perugia around those dates.

Don’t miss the remains of the Rocca Paolina fortress and its underground medieval streets. Regarded as one of Italy's best buildings, Palazzo dei Priori encompasses the Collegio del Cambio, Collegio della Mercanzia, and the National Gallery. Trasimeno Lake is 22 km away.

Fontivegge Railway Station is outside the city centre, while San Egidio Airport is 12 km away. Whether you need a 5-star hotel or a historic guest house, check out the deals for Perugia accommodation on Booking.com!

A very busy area and city. You have to go up to visit the historic centre. Parking is at t he foot of the hills Perugia is built upon. But there strategical located escalators to assist you on your way up. Perugia is also well located for day trips to many other interesting towns such as Assisi, Gubbio, Spello, and the Val D'Orcia.

Since 2001 I am visiting Perugia during Umbria Jazz almost every year. For me, the city is almost magical when there is the festival, and when there is no festival it´s still a stunningly beautiful city that has a lot going for it. The ancient city centre with the famous catacombs, the small alleys going criss-cross up- and down hill, the 2500 year old Etruscan arc, the great buildings, churches and museums, the Giardini Carducci with its stunning views over Umbria... And not to forget excellent food and beverages. My favourit place is the Bottega del Vino, where I spent many many hours enjoying excellent foor and wine, while listening to live music. I´ll always keep coming back to Perugia; it´s fantastic!

Perugia is a popular town with plenty going on. The main centres can get busy and noisy especially during a music festival. Choose carefully if you like your sleep. The main squares also attract their fair share of buskers and street artists.
