The western wall tunnels and excavations are underrated tourist spots many-a-times. Pre-book for the tour before your actual day of visit, to have a confirmed spot for you and your group because they get filled easily. It takes approx 1 hour for the western tunnel tour.
The old city was mostly closed as a result of unexpected VIP visiting.... Could not get close to the wall but had to settle for a view from a building across. Time you visit if you can. We could have returned the next day but did not rate the effort as worthwhile and went to the Tower of David instead.
Give yourself an hour or two to be here. Even if you aren't Jewish, it's incredible. I'd recommend bringing a pen and journaling. You can then leave your paper in the wall. It's pretty emotional and beautiful.
To also visit the kotel tunnels starts by the Western Wall. When in the Old City, dress conservatively. Conservative dress required at churches. The definition of conservative is to cover knees and collar bones and have at least short sleeves. Yes, men also should have long shorts or pants which cover their knees.
Highly symbolic as the Western Wall is the only remaining vestige of the Temple of Solomon (destroyed by the Romans). At the same time, it is part of the elevation on top of which two mosques were built (Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa).
Go on Thursday (was like that in July), you see more happy Jew family celebrating bar mitswa. Of course you have longer queues at the security gate but worth the time. You can see the rituals and feel the happy atmosphere.
