A very busy city with plenty of traffic going through which is expected what with the ferryport. The staff at the Information Centre are not only helpful but know their 'stuff'. Both the steam and electric trains were wonderful experiences. If staying more than a few days, buy a travel card; worth the money. Unfortunately the town is quite run down. The gardens are a joy to walk through and very peaceful should you wish to rest. Buses are extremely comfortable; excellent timetables and all stops rare dispalyed in front pf the bus; no chance of getting off the wrong staff. Found local people very friendly. My first visit to Isle of Man and was not disappointed.

did nt do much in ballasalla spent time in douglas castletown port erin & peel The island towns are well connected by bus vannin & also the island has excellent heritage the tramway from douglas to ramsey & railway from douglas to port erin!
A trip to the sound for the view & bracing sea air is reccomended

There isn't much to do in Ramsey in winter apart from a good choice of pubs but plenty of nice walks.
Bus service to anywhere on the island is great we did a circular trip on three buses which took up most of one day stopping off in Peel and Douglas for a while.

A good place to explore other areas, public transport is good and allowed us to get about to visit Douglas etc. Port Erin has some lovely community activities going on such as a live band on the beach and young musicians. Port Erin is clean and has a nice chilled vibe.

Castletown had lots of back alleys, viewpoints and museums...
Castletown had lots of back alleys, viewpoints and museums plus the local bus service stopped in the town square. There was quite a bit to watch with several motorbikes setting off and a pipe band there today.
Castle Rushen dominates with a very pretty little harbour and several museums as well as the steam train leaving quite close by.
It was very pretty and much more interesting than Douglas. We arrived by ferry and the bus journey was lovely from Douglas to Castletown. We flew out from Ronaldsway airport which was walking distance and has the best small military museums that I have ever been to.
Can't rate the town highly enough.

Port St Mary is a lovely quiet place with a bus service going to Port Erin and Douglas plus other tourist spots on the island, has a couple of restaurant’s, various shops but is mainly lovely and peaceful

Great location with easy links to explore the whole island...
Great location with easy links to explore the whole island from a quiet base. Loads of walking trails and history on your doorstep. Easy bus and MER links. About 4 miles from Snaefell. Friendly and helpful locals willing to help if they can. Must see the Great Laxey Wheel. We thought it was fantastic. Stayed on the IOM for 4 days and used the clean, frequent and punctual buses to get around.

Everything you need.
Everything you need. Supermarket, a couple of pubs, a few local shops, lovely steam railway line and station that you can get all the way to Douglas. Also a fantastic sandy beach, ideal for swimming in the summer or winter walks.

The IOM in general is a great destination. Maughold is a quiet rural location so your local amenities are a drive or bus ride away. Enough pubs and restaurants in general, and lots of cafes, but transport is a must, be it private or public. There are many walking routes and trails on the island, and plenty of attractions for all. These could prove quite expensive so a search for family discount or multi-visit discounts would be beneficial. There are enough decent beaches to keep a family with kids happy, but don't expect theme park style fairground rides. Things are a little more low-key and tasteful. The IOM is a very picturesque island and well worth a visit.

Douglas is a beautiful, bustling , vibrant and busy area , being the island’s capital, especially the promenade, with so many ethnic restaurants , bars. Beautifully kept gardens with plenty of seating in the garden areas.
Spotlessly clean streets with plenty of litter bins. Variety of shops with many local businesses.
Museums, theatre, horse drawn trams and trains .
Most of the parking in the main area on the promenade (ie, hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars) is permit/ disc parking area. These range from 2 and 3 hours limits, further along there is also 16 hours parking . Parking discs are available at the Sea Ferry terminal, Police Station, Car Rentals and Post Offices.
