Gateway to the Inner Hebrides
Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

Lively town with excellent shops and a good base for exploring the area and travelling by ferry to the islands, especially Mull and iona. Oban is great place for a relaxing short break. Bring a warm jacket though as the location gets cold winds. If you like fresh seafood you will enjoy the restaurants which provide lots of fresh seafood. Great place to visit.
Great place to visit. Loved the walk up to the faux Roman Ruin. Was catching the ferry to Colansay but would have liked time to visit more of the excellent eateries. As we had to leave early on the first day in order to catch the ferry to the Isle of Mull the young proprietor offered to provide a packed lunch (or breakfast) and leave it in the fridge for us. Very considerate, thank you! Dinner would have been possible but we had made other arrangements in Oban, instead. We did have a drink in the hotel bar, though!
